The Egyptian government on Wednesday passed a law criminalizing protests and strikes. Under the new law, anyone organizing or calling for a protest will be sentenced to jail and/or a fine of LE500,000.

The new law will be enforced as long as the current Emergency Law is in place, said the Council of Ministers in a statement on Wednesday. The Emergency Law has been in force since 1981 following the assassination of former President Anwar Sadat.

The new law will apply to anyone inciting, urging, promoting or participating in a protest or strike that hampers or delays work at any private or public establishments.

Since the overthrow of former President Hosni Mubarak on 11 February, Egypt has witnessed nationwide labor strikes and political protests. Among those protesting have been university students, political activists, railway workers, doctors, pharmacists, lawyers, journalists, pensioners, and the police force.

#Syria turmoil: Fresh protests erupt - #Revolution

Fresh protests have flared in Syria at the end of a week that has seen dozens of demonstrators killed.

Offices of the ruling Baath party were burned down in the southern town of Tafas and coastal town of Latakia, witnesses said, while hundreds renewed demonstrations in Deraa.

The authorities earlier released more than 200 political prisoners in Damascus, a UK-based rights group said.

The protests are a serious challenge to President Bashar al-Assad’s regime.

The US and the UN had condemned the Syrian government following reports that troops fired on peaceful protesters on Friday.

However, the political and information adviser to President Bashar al-Assad, Bouthaina Shaaban, has told the BBC it was not security forces that had shot protesters but “armed groups” firing on civilians indiscriminately.

‘Downfall’

The biggest protests on Saturday were in Tafas, 18km (11 miles) north of the city of Deraa, which is close to the Jordan border and which has become the centre of the challenge to the 11-year rule of President Assad.

Thousands took to the streets in Tafas to bury three protesters who witnesses said had been killed by security forces on Friday.

Reports of the deaths of protesters in Syria cannot be independently confirmed.

The witnesses said the protesters chanted anti-government slogans and burned the Baath HQ and a police station.

In Deraa on Saturday, hundreds of protesters climbed on to the rubble of a statue of ex-President Hafez al-Assad that was torn down on Friday and resumed anti-government chants.

Some were holding cardboard signs reading “the people want the downfall of the regime”, witnesses said.

A human rights activist, Ammar Qurabi, told Associated Press news agency there were also protests in the coastal town of Latakia, with another Baath party office set on fire.

A Syrian official told Agence France-Presse news agency that two people were killed by unidentified snipers in Latakia on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Ms Shaaban told BBC Arabic there were “foreign schemes” aimed at destabilising Syria and that a number of foreign nationals had been detained.

She said Syria respected the rights of people to protest peacefully.

Ms Shaaban also said political reform had been under discussion in Syria for some time and that the authorities intended to put constitutional and party reforms before the people in a referendum as soon as possible.

Earlier, the London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said more than 200 inmates, mostly Islamists, were freed from Damascus’ Saidnaya prison.

However, reports about the total number involved differ, with another human rights activist being quoted by Reuters as saying that 70 political prisoners were freed.

The Syrian government has so far made no official comment on the issue but Ms Shaaban said she would be surprised if her country had hundreds of such detainees.

Dozens of people have been killed in protests this week, rights activists and witnesses say, sparking demonstrations on Friday in towns and cities across Syria, including the capital, Damascus.

In Damascus, hundreds marched on King Faisal Street chanting: “Peaceful, Peaceful, God, Syria, Freedom.” This protest was broken up by security forces and many were arrested, reports said.

Supporters of President Assad staged large counter-protests and clashes erupted between the two sides.

Other towns witnessing protests on Friday included Tall and Hama.

Are social reforms enough to avert a revolution in the kingdom?

Saudi Arabia has mobilised thousands of troops to try to quell rising dissent in the kingdom. Protestors have called for a ‘day of rage’ and are using social network sites to rally protestors.
 
But will King Abdullah’s announcement of billions of dollars worth of social reforms be enough to stave off a revolution? And is the House of Saud really listening to the growing voices of discontent?

There are three main population centres in the vast Arabian Peninsula state, where demonstrations could emerge:  The capital Riyadh, which has a population of more than four million, the main port city of Jeddah, with a population of more than two million and the Shia Muslim areas of the Eastern Province, which sit on much of the vast reserves of oil in the kingdom.

Joining the programme to discuss these issues are Abdulaziz Alkhames, a campaigner for Saudi Human Rights Centre; Mai Yamani, the author of Changed Identities: the challenge of the new generation in Saudi Arabia; and Khaled Almaeena, the editor-in-chief of the English-language daily Arab News.

U.S. government now view protesting Americans as terrorists – You’re either with us or against us.

 

Violent Radicalization and Homegrown Terrorism Prevention Act of 2007.  Never heard of it.  That is because the U.S. Senate hasn’t yet passed it but the Obama government is trying to get it passed before the Egyptian revolution, for Change, Liberty and Social Justice lands on U.S. soil.  The Violent Radicalization and Homegrown Terrorism Prevention Act of 2007 is a bill sponsored by Rep. Jane Harman (D-CA) in the 110th United States Congress.  Its stated purpose is to deal with “homegrown terrorism and violent radicalization”.

The bill will:

Amended the Homeland Security Act of 2002 to add provisions concerning the prevention of homegrown terrorism (terrorism by individuals born, raised, or based and operating primarily in the United States).

In the bill the term `homegrown terrorism’ means the use, planned use, or threatened use, of force or violence by a group or individual born, raised, or based and operating primarily within the United States or any possession of the United States to intimidate or coerce the United States government, the civilian population of the United States, or any segment thereof, in furtherance of political or social objectives.

This bill was passed in the House on October 23, 2007 with a vote of 404 to 6.  It was introduced to the Senate on August 2, 2007 as S-1959.  and has been referred to the Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs. The Bill was introduced by Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME), and has been co-sponsored by Sen. Norm Coleman (R-MN).  The Senate bill was reported dead by the Bill of Rights Defense Committee and CQ Politics.  A staffer to Sen. Joe Lieberman, indicated that the bill is not dead.

Critics charge that the vagueness of the bill’s definitions would permit the government to classify many types of venerated American political activity, such as civil disobedience (political dissent), as terrorism. Critics frequently cite Section 899A, which reads, in part: “The use, planned use, or threatened use, of force …to coerce the ..government, (or) civilian population ..in furtherance of political or social objectives”, as particularly problematic. They argue that major societal reforms, which are now accepted but were perceived at the time as threatening to the government, such as civil rights, suffrage, and others, would be classified as terrorism.

Then-presidential candidate Dennis Kucinich said he believed the bill to be “unconstitutional” and has referred to the bill as a “thought crime bill”  The Baltimore Sun published an opinion article by Professor Emeritus Ralph E. Shaffer and R. William Robinson, titled “Here come the thought police.”

Conservative commentator Devvy Kidd writes: “Since the bill doesn’t specifically define what an extremist belief system is, it is entirely up to the interpretation of the government…. Essentially they have defined violent radicalization as thought crime.”

In an interview aired on Democracy Now, Academic and author Ward Churchill said: “HR 1955, as I understand it, provides a basis for subjective interpretation of dissident speech….”

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) issued a statement saying: “Law enforcement should focus on action, not thought. We need to worry about the people who are committing crimes rather than those who harbor beliefs that the government may consider to be extreme.”

The National Lawyers Guild and the Society of American Law Teachers issued a joint statement opposing the Bill: “The National Lawyers Guild and the Society of American Law Teachers strongly urge the Senate to refuse to pass the Violent Radicalization and Homegrown Terrorism Prevention Act of 2007.”

The Center for Constitutional Rights opposes the bill.

The John Birch Society wrote in an Action Alert: “the legislation could attack First Amendment rights by mandating the government to clamp down on free speech online, among other things.”

In the wake of the successful Egyptian revolution against government oppression the Obama government is planning to reintroduce the bill and have it passed.  The U.S. government now fears the same fate as dictatorial ruler Hosni Mubarak.  The U.S. government fear that the U.S. people may soon echo the call of the Egyptian people and begin to petition for change.

The Declaration of Independence states that government derives its just – or lawful – powers from the “consent of the governed.” The underlying principle implied in the Declaration was that “We the People” are the true and rightful government of the United States, and as Abraham Lincoln declared in his Gettysburg Address, “government of the people by the people and for the people shall not perish from this earth.” Elected and appointed officials are managers selected to work on our behalf in order to accomplish our collective will. We do not, however, elect them to dictate what our will is, or should be.

However, in the event that government becomes one consisting of rulers rather than representatives, the U.S. government determined over 200 years ago what the course of action should be.

“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. — That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed…”

In the event that Americans find themselves at odds with their government, the Declaration tells them:  “… That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to affect their Safety and Happiness.”

According to the nation’s own foundational text, the American people have the right:  “… when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security. — Such has been the patient sufferance of these Colonies; and such is now the necessity which constrains them to alter their former Systems of Government.”

What measures do the U.S. government seek to implement against the American people they now deem as terrorists?  The same power as Egyptian dictator Mubarak sought – to shut down all lines of communication.  The U.S. government is now working to reintroduce an Internet kill switch bill.   A bill handing President Obama power over privately owned computer systems during a “national cyberemergency,” and prohibiting any review by the court system.  The bill is being reworded to include government control of all wireless Internet (Wi-Fi).  Why does the U.S. government want to control Wi-Fi?  When the Egyptian government shut down the cable Internet Wi-Fi was used to keep the rest of the World apprised to what was happening in Egypt.  HR 1955 titled the Violent Radicalization and Homegrown Terrorism Prevention Act of 2007 mentions the Internet as a main source for terrorist propaganda. The bill even mentions streams in obvious reference to many of the patriot and pro-constitution Internet radio networks that have been formed. It also mentions that homegrown terrorists span all ages and races indicating that the Congress is stating that everyone who conveys dissatisfaction with or opposition to the policies of government is a potential terrorist.

How do you fix a $40 million school budget deficit? By firing teachers. At least, that’s what the Providence, Rhode Island board of education did to its almost 2,000. HLN has reaction from both sides.

TOM BRADY (Superintendent): “In the sense of providing flexibility for programs and future budget decisions for our children, it provides the most flexibility. That’s why it was done.”
TEACHER1: “I am heart broken. I can’t tell you how much this hurts.”
TEACHER2: “I feel numb. I almost feel like I need mourn the death of an innocence or – this is just surreal.”


No teachers- no school… so obviously they’re not all going to lose their jobs. WPRI explains — the teachers just have to reapply for their positions. And since they’re being terminated instead of laid off, they can’t be hired back based on seniority.

“The teachers accuse the school board of firing them so they could pick and choose who can be hired back next school year.”

The problem is, firing all the teachers in the middle of the school year doesn’t make a lot of sense. So it has led many, like local news blog Go Local Prov.com- thinking- what else is going on here?

“…if the city was just worried about the $40 million deficit it is facing in the school budget it simply could have laid off the teachers. Instead, terminating all of them signaled a hidden, anti-union agenda…”

But The New York Times says- there’s a reason the school district is trying to get around the union. Under current teacher union contracts, it’s almost impossible to fire bad teachers. The most the school can do is call for an evaluation- and the Times reports- those are pretty shoddy.

“Most evaluations are perfunctory — a drive-by classroom observation by a vice principal — and hearings to prove incompetence can be long and costly.”

Finally, a writer for The Atlanta Journal-Constitution says it’s not OK for cities and states facing budget blues to swing the hatchet on education.

“In budget crunches, schools are a natural place to look for cuts as they cost a lot.  I still can’t get over that Georgia chose to remedy its gas shortage a few years ago by shuttering schools for two days.”

Providence Mayor Angel Taveras (Ta-Wa-Res) - who pushed for the firings- says he was simply trying to comply with state law which requires the government to inform all employees of any possible change in their employment before March 1st.

A few years ago, Bahrain’s oppressed and overcrowded Shiite majority began using Google Earth to view palaces and other estates that make up 95% of the country. As these images churned up discontent, the government blocked Google Earth. However, an anonymous PDF guide was distributed by email.

The NYT’s Tom Friedman names these images in a list of “not-so-obvious forces” that fed the mass revolt.

The cords powered the lights and cameras during Fox’s remote broadcasts. A Fox News staffer says no broadcast was interrupted [damn] because of the incident and no permanent damage was done. Dan Edelstein, 23, of Chicago has been charged with disorderly conduct.

The Koch brothers have made a science of fabricating ‘grassroots’ organizations and advertising campaigns to support them in an attempt to sway voters based on their falsehoods. Americans for Prosperity, Club for Growth and Citizens United are just a few of these organizations. In a world where corporate money has become the lifeblood of political influence, the labor unions are one of the few ways citizens have to fight against corporate greed. Anonymous cannot ignore the plight of the citizen-workers of Wisconsin, or the opportunity to fight for the people in America’s broken political system. For these reasons, we feel that the Koch brothers threaten the United States democratic system and, by extension, all freedom-loving individuals everywhere. As such, we have no choice but to spread the word of the Koch brothers’ political manipulation, their single-minded intent and the insidious truth of their actions in Wisconsin, for all to witness.
Anonymous hears the voice of the downtrodden American people, whose rights and liberties are being systematically removed one by one, even when their own government refuses to listen or worse - is complicit in these attacks. We are actively seeking vulnerabilities, but in the mean time we are calling for all supporters of true Democracy, and Freedom of The People, to boycott all Koch Industries’ paper products. We welcome unions across the globe to join us in this boycott to show that you will not allow big business to dictate your freedom.

#Anonymous Uncovers Corruption in #Wisconsin Labor Dispute

No longer content to be hacker watchdogs, Anonymous is now apparently blowing the whistle on the underlying government corruption in the Wisconsin brouhaha.

Anonymous brought down the Americans for Prosperity website with a DDoS attack and released a statement asking us all to boycott Koch Industries products like Quilted Northern, Angel Soft and Dixie cups. The statement claimed that the billionaire brothers Koch are undermining the democracy of our country through funding organizations to protest against the state workers of Wisconsin who are fighting for their right to negotiate their contracts as a group. Anonymous believes Koch Industries is doing this in order to profit and not because of any interest in furthering the political process. As of press time, however, the Americans for Prosperity website is back online.

The goings-on in Wisconsin have been the talk of the mainstream news in America the last few weeks. The newly elected Governor of the state previously best known for its dairy products and football teams proposed a bill that would seriously curtail state-paid workers (including teachers) medical benefits and make it illegal for them to negotiate with the state as a consolidated group. Removing the labor unions’ right to collective bargaining will effectively render them useless organizations, and even though Governor Scott Walker says that he is more concerned with balancing his budget, he says he won’t budge on outlawing collective bargaining.

Enter Anonymous. The hacker group discovered a little-noticed clause in the bill proposed by Walker which would allow the state to sell its utilities to anyone it chose, at any price, without the public even being notified. This clause would allow companies like Koch Industries to purchase publicly owned utility plants, and Anonymous believes this is the reason that Koch-funded “grassroots” organizations like Americans For Prosperity, Club for Growth and Citizens United are supporting Walker’s plan to rid the unions of their collective power.

At first glance, it seems that the hacker conglomerate Anonymous is gaining legitimacy in furthering its own political agenda of freedom of information and empowering the downtrodden. Many people, myself included, want to picture this loosely-held together group of posters on a forum as something grander than they actually are. One or two, or even twenty so-called “members” of Anonymous might support the unions in Wisconsin, but there are just as many - if not more - who think the whole mess is a load of political bullshit that’s not worth their attention. As one Anonymous member writes, “Anonymous is not some leftwing sockpuppet to do the bidding of unions and Rachel Maddow. Nor are they all a bunch of Ron Paul loving teapartyfags. Anonymous consists of everything from Anarchists, to Libertarians, to Conservatives, Liberals and anything else on the political spectrum.”

Anonymous even has a handy guide for people who are too quick to equate the group’s actions with some overarching political agenda:

Anonymous has no official position on George Soros
Anonymous has no official position on the Koch brothers

Anonymous has no official position on CNN
Anonymous has no official position on NAFTA
Anonymous has no official position on the IMF or World Bank
Anonymous has no official position on Wall Street

I don’t know why, but that list makes me happy. My faith in the hackerdom of Anonymous is restored.
