(HigginsBlog) – TEPCO believes they have accidentally spilled 12 tons of radioactive water from the Fukushima nuclear power plant has spilled into the Pacific Ocean.
Just weeks ago I reported the plume of radioactive water the TEPCO purposefully dumped into the Pacific Ocean after being strongly urged to do s by the US government was now hitting Hawaii.
While the devastation from that release has been catastrophic enough even more radiation will follow as TEPCO now admits they have been leaking highly radioactive water directly into the Pacific ocean.

The latest marine radiation plume simulation from ASR LTD shows that the radioactive contamination from the Fukushima nuclear meltdown has now reached norther Hawaii.
This should be no surprise, since it was originally disclosed shortly after the disaster that the plume would reach Hawaii within about 1 year and California in 2 to 3 years when the government decided not to test fish at that time.
Please note this simulation, as explained below, shows only the extent of where the particles in radioactive plume have traveled.
It does not attempt to estimate the dilution of the radiation since such estimates are currently impossible due to refusal by TEPCO and the government of Japan to release critical scientific data required to calculate the concentration of the plume.
Also note that the simulation only takes into account the million gallons of radioactive water TEPCO purposefully dumped into the ocean.
That water was later found to have been 7.5 million times the legal limit and the dumping was done after TEPCO was were “Stongly urged to do so by the US government.

TEPCO is says they believe a newly discovered leak in their decontamination system is responsible leaking of additional 12 tons of highly radioactive water directly into the ocean.
RT – Officials at the Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO), which acts as the operator of the crippled nuclear facility, say there is reason to believe some of the 12 tons of radioactive water has flowed into the Pacific Ocean.
A leak was found in a pipe attached to a temporary decontamination system. The water, once it has been used to cool the reactors, contains massive amounts of radioactive substances and is put into the water-processing facility so it can be recycled for use as a coolant.
“Our officials confirmed that cooling water leaked at a joint in the pipes,” a TEPCO spokesman told reporters, adding that “it is possible that some of the water may have flowed outside the facility and poured into the ocean.”
This accident is the latest of several leaks of radioactive water at the plant, undermining the government’s claim that the shuttered reactors were now under control.
Just last month, about 120 tons of radioactive water leaked at the plant’s water decontamination system and about 80 liters (21 gallons) seeped into the ocean, according to TEPCO.
The plant, which is just north-east of Tokyo, was crippled by meltdowns and explosions caused by Japan’s massive earthquake and tsunami in March last year.

Critics dismiss #OccupyWallStreet as a bunch of dirty, whining hippies and trustafarians. But many of the protesters at Zuccotti Plaza are actually hacker-minded geeks bringing an engineering mentality to bear on politics and several high and low-tech problems.
The #OWS encampment runs on generators that power a media center packed with laptops, Wi-Fi and video equipment. Live updates and operational messages propagate over Twitter as well as over closed alternative networks resistant to sniffing by unwanted observers. Digital donations are funneled through Kickstarter, and material donations arriving from around the country supply a kitchen and a medical station — which treats minor protest hazards such as pepper spray and cuts.
The DIY nature of the movement evokes the spirit of the Maker Faire and Hackathon events, with participants contributing their skills and creativity to support a larger, loosely defined movement or goal.

Apparently, calling for economic justice is “terrorism” now.

Bradley Manning and Julian Assange Both Nominated for Nobel Peace Prize
The Nobel Peace Prize nominees for 2011 recognize a number of activists, among them Julian Assange, Bradley Manning, Wael Ghonim, Tunisian blogger Lina Ben Mhenni, and Egyptian Israa Abdel Fattah together with the April 6 Youth Movement.
Thus the Arab Spring, as it has been termed, is well-represented in the Nobel Peace Prize nominees this year, and with good reason: It was a remarkable grassroots revolution that is still changing the North African and Middle East dynamic and, indeed, the world.
Much of this, however, might not have been possible but for the actions of Bradley Manning and Julian Assange’s WikiLeaks.
Manning allegedly leaked diplomatic cables and video (of a 2007 Apache helicopter attack) to WikiLeaks. Manning had access to SIPRNet and the Joint Worldwide Intelligence Communications System from his workstation in Iraq. His reason for leaking the documents? Manning wrote to former hacker Adrian Lamo, “I want people to see the truth… regardless of who they are … because without information, you cannot make informed decisions as a public.”
Assange, as founder and public face of WikiLeaks, took these documents—in addition to other diplomatic cables and documents—and published them on WikiLeaks—an act the old New York Times would have done without hesitation in the Pentagon Papers-era, but seems quite reluctant to do in the 21st century.
And while a Nobel Peace Prize nomination might not help Manning avoid prison time or get Assange released from house arrest and his legal charade, it certainly is a form of vindication for both men; many people across the world admire their principled stand.
If it had not been for WikiLeaks publishing the leaked diplomatic cables, the Arab Spring might not have been possible. The leaks were the catalyst, as Amnesty International stated, supplying the momentum in Tunisia and Egypt, for example. Even Retired U.S. Army Reserve Colonel Ann Wright, in a recent Stars & Stripes editorial, has called Wikileaks “a critically important tool for those who seek to uphold basic human-rights standards and the professional conduct of U.S. military forces.”
As such, both Manning and Assange deserve serious consideration for the Nobel Peace Prize.

On the anniversary of the Pope’s visit to Britain, the Catholic Church has been trying to spin it as having been a grand success that brought Catholics flocking back to church and had a profound effect on the religious attitudes of the population at large. In short, we’re a better and more moral country because of the pope’s little outing.
In fact, 29% of those who were questioned said they couldn’t remember hearing or seeing anything about the visit. 6% of those who say they did recall that the visit happened say they can’t remember a thing about it.Except that, according to an opinion poll commissioned by the Catholic Church itself, hardly anyone remembers that it actually happened. And 91% said it made no difference to their moral outlook at all. Strangely, the Church doesn’t seem anxious to draw attention to the results of this poll, which was carried out by Opinion Research Business among 2,049 adults.
Of the individual events — meeting the Queen, speaking in Parliament, meeting the Prime Minister — typically only 1% — or less — of those who had any memory of the visit recalled them. (A few were up to 5%.)
The biggest proportion of those who recalled anything about the visit (albeit only 11%) remembered the NSS’s campaign about the enormous cost of the jamboree to the taxpayer.
And as for the impact it had – 91% of respondents said the pope’s visit made no difference whatsoever to their personal or spiritual values.
Asked for their opinion of the pope, 41% said that it was “unfavourable” or “very unfavourable”; only 25% said it was “favourable” or “very favourable”.
Other questions asked:
- “How favourable is your opinion of the Catholic Church?”
Favourable/very favourable 21%
Unfavourable/very unfavourable 59%
- I am satisfied with the Pope’s apology for the child abuse scandal
Strongly Agree/Agree: 24%
Strongly Disagree/Disagree: 58%
- The right steps are being taken to avoid a repeat of the child abuse scandal
Strongly Agree/Agree: 21%
Strongly Disagree/Disagree: 45%
- Catholic Church is out of touch with today’s society
Strongly Agree/Agree: 70%
Strongly Disagree/Disagree: 15%
- The Catholic Church is, on balance, a force for good
Strongly Agree/Agree: 32%
Strongly Disagree/Disagree: 43%
- The pope’s visit was good for Britain
Strongly Agree/Agree: 32%
Strongly Disagree/Disagree: 37%
- Religion is on balance a force for good
Strongly Agree/Agree: 51%
Strongly Disagree/Disagree: 30%
- To which religious group do you belong?
Christian 53%; None 36%; Muslim 2%; Hindu 1%; Jew 1%; Sikh 1%; Buddhist 1%
- The UK should guard against aggressive forms of secularism
Strongly Agree/Agree: 62%
Strongly Disagree/Disagree: 16%
[NSS comment: no definition of ‘aggressive secularism’ was given]
- “There is a place for God, religion and virtue in public life”
Strongly Agree/Agree 58%
Strongly Disagree/Disagree 25%
[NSS comment: by throwing “virtue” into the mix, they got the answer they wanted. Who would say that there was no room for virtue in public life?]
- Religious people should not have to keep their religious views to themselves because of political correctness
Strongly Agree/Agree: 67%
Strongly Disagree/Disagree: 18%
[NSS comment: throwing the ill-defined bogeyman of ‘political correctness’ into the question renders the answer meaningless]

Three ongoing military campaigns that are costing the US a fortune give no comfort for the nearly 14 million unemployed Americans. (WFMY) – Bank of America Gets Pad Locked After Homeowner Forecloses On It
Have you heard the one about a homeowner foreclosing on a bank?
Well, it has happened in Florida and involves a North Carolina based bank.
Instead of Bank of America foreclosing on some Florida homeowner, the homeowners had sheriff’s deputies foreclose on the bank.
It started five months ago when Bank of America filed foreclosure papers on the home of a couple, who didn’t owe a dime on their home.
