A common thread that binds many internet users and impels them toward Anonymous is the concept that information, by its nature, is free; and that communication should be unfettered. The open sharing and expression of ideas and opinions, however controversial or divergent, is the cornerstone of all free societies. This ability empowers individuals to determine their own destinies; justice is possible only when the influential cannot force others to remain silent about abuse.

The precise meaning of “Freedom of Information” varies according to the individual. To some, it simply means being able to seek out public knowledge on a subject without fear of retribution or censorship from the government. This view is based on the idea that access to accurate, relevant information informs rational opinions about the world around us.

To others, Freedom of Information is a call for greater corporate and governmental transparency. This conviction stems from the notion that in order for citizens to participate fully and democratically, those in power must share all kinds of information–whether or not it is politic for them to do so. Thus fraud, theft and abuse must be exposed to the public, and the perpetrators held accountable for their actions.

Finally, some individuals view Freedom of Information as a call to rethink current positions on the concept of intellectual property, in the interest of a better world. This view favors diminishing legal and corporate limitations on the use of ideas or creative work that may inhibit innovation and progress.

For any or all of these reasons, many Anonymous activists believe that Freedom of Information is as vital to a free society as the universal right to freedom of expression. WhyWeProtest supports these activists in their various Freedom of Information initiatives.

Church of Scientology attempts damage control with new ad #Co$ #$cientology

After taking a recent beating in the press the Church of Scientology is engaged in damage control. Trying to polish its tarnished image, the religion developed by L Ron Hubbard is giving a big push to a television commercial extolling the supposed virtues of Scientology.

The church is reeling from a recent profile of former member Paul Haggis. The profile is extensive and exhaustive, detailing Scientology crimes and misdemeanors, incriminating the secretive Sea Org, and making allegations of slave labor and human trafficking.

The long (two minutes) commercial has been given national air time during The Today Show on CBS. At two minutes long, the ad is hard to miss. The TV commercial is an attempt to promote its social programs such as “mental health reform” and “criminal reform” which — it claims — reach 2.2 million people every day.

The recent allegations against Scientology came to light in the recently released profile of former Church of Scientology member Canadian writer-director Paul Haggis, a profile written by Lawrence Wright entitled “Apostate: Paul Haggis vs. the Church of Scientology.” 

The ad claims the Church of Scientology sponsors social programs that reach 2,208,975 people every day: Tutoring, mentoring, drug education, human rights education, drug rehabilitation, criminal reform, and mental health reform—in 189 nations.

Did you read that New Yorker piece on the Church of Scientology? You really have to. I know it’s long, but it’s worth it. If you’re short on time, there are a lot of summaries.

Along with some incredible new details, there are the previously reported stories of rampant physical abuse of underlings by church head David Miscavige, the church’s “Sea Org” full of underage workers signed to “billion-year contracts” performing manual labor for little to no money, and the tales of the church separating families and milking its members for thousands of dollars. The church is even under investigation by the FBI for what could amount to human trafficking.

And, of course, like any other moneymaking American enterprise, it has good friends in Washington.

As far as I know, the only Scientologist to ever actually serve in Congress was the late Sonny Bono. His widow, Mary Bono Mack, who inherited his seat, attended courses, but never took to the religion.

Former Rep. Ben Gilman, R-N.Y., received thousands from the church, and, in return, as chairman of the International Relations Committee, he complained on several occasions that European nations were discriminating against Scientology. Or, put another way: “[On] the same day (July 2, 1998), ten prominent Scientologists donated a total of $7,400 to Congressman Benjamin A. Gilman’s coffer — three months before he signed on as a co-sponsor to Matt Salmon’s House of Representatives bill that was critical of Germany’s protection of religious freedom …” He was also thanked with this glowing profile in the church’s Freedom magazine.

Amidst the embarassing revelations for the US Government with the WikiLeaks releases, a deadly trend has emerged. Government representatives have begun to voice approval for the execution of Wikileaks spokesman Julian Assange under the guise of protecting America. Not only is this an abhorrent abuse of power, but it is being disturbingly well received.

Much rhetoric has been thrown about by politicians and pundits alike. As these public officials scramble to find a means to align the world with their position, they will seemingly stop at nothing. Rather than focus on the subject of the story, the cable leaks, they have taken to derogatory personal attacks on the WikiLeaks spokesman. He has been called a hacker, a traitor, a terrorist, a sex offender, and more in an attempt to discredit the organization.

Wikileaks has been repeatedly described as both “traitorous” and “treasonous”. This falsehood depicts a profound ignorance of America’s laws on treason, as well as the overall facts of the situation. Wikileaks is no more a “traitor” than Deep Throat or the New York Times. While Wikileaks has published confidential information, it is merely doing so as a media outlet. Any actual crime that took place was committed by the persons who obtained the information initially and chose to distribute it.

“We should treat Mr Assange the same way as other high-value terrorist targets: Kill him.” - conservative columnist Jeffrey T Kuhner

“Why can’t we use our various assets to harass, snatch or neutralize Julian Assange and his collaborators, wherever they are?” - former Chief of Staff William Kristol

Representative Candice Miller urged Congress and the President to take action, “It’s time that the Obama administration treats WikiLeaks for what it is, a terrorist organization whose continued operation threatens our security. Shut it down, shut it down. It’s time to shut down this terrorist organization, this terrorist website, WikiLeaks.” She is not alone in this misguided view. Prominent news outlets have continued to spread this rhetoric, taking only brief opportunities to discuss the validity of the statement.

To be clear, terrorists employ violent attacks in an attempt to instill fear in their opposition. To refer to Wikileaks in this manner does a disservice to everyone that has died at the hands of a true terrorist.

We are entering into a new era of information availability, and WikiLeaks is our first bastion of truth. Make no mistake, this is not a war on Terror, but rather a war on Government Accountability. We cannot, and will not, be silenced. Our time has come to set aside complacency and make our voices heard. Anonymous stands with WikiLeaks to remind the world that noone can claim ownership of the truth.

Knowledge is Power.

We are Anonymous.

We are Legion.

We do not forgive.
