#Anonymous declares #Cyberwar on #Syria government sites - Syrian Embassy in #China under attack #OpSyria

anonymous hackers

The hacktivist group Anonymous has announced a cyber war against Syrian Government websites hosted outside the country.

“Today, at precisely 10:30 AM ET all Internet traffic into and out of Syria ceased. Within a half hour of this sudden shut down, the PBX land-lines were degraded by 90% and Mobile connectivity was degraded by 75%. The nation of Syria has gone dark. And Anonymous knows all to well what happens in the dark places.” Hacker said in the press release.

“When your government shuts down the Internet, shut down your government.” ~ Anonymous Egypt.

” Beginning at 9:00 PM ET USA Anonymous will begin removing from the Internet all web assets belonging to the Assad regime that are NOT hosted in Syria. We will begin with the websites and servers belonging to ALL Syrian Embassies abroad” Hacker said.

The hacker collective has launched distributed denial of service (DDOS) attack against the  website of the Syrian Embassy of in China(syria.org.cn).

They also hacked and defaced the Syrian Embassy website in Belgium (syrianembassy.be)

*Update* As part of the operation, Anonymous Australia has defaced the Industrial Bank of Syria (industrialbank.gov.sy) and left a message: “Sorry admin but your page was taked by us - Because from Latin America, we are sad seeing destroyed between brother countries. - Please governments.”

How #Syria Turned Off the Internet - CloudFlare blog - #OpSyria

Today, 29 November 2012, between 1026 and 1029 (UTC), all traffic from Syria to the rest of the Internet stopped. At CloudFlare, we witnessed the drop off. We’ve spent the morning studying the situation to understand what happened. The following graph shows the last several days of traffic coming to CloudFlare’s network from Syria.

Since the beginning of today’s outage, we have received no requests from Syrian IP space. That is a more complete blackout than we’ve seen when other countries have been cut from the Internet (see, for example, Egypt where while most traffic was cut off some requests still trickled out).

The graph above shows two other incidents over the last week. On 25 November 2012 at approximately 0800 UTC we witnessed a 15 minute period during which Syrian traffic was cut to only 13% of normal levels. Again on 27 November 2012 at 0730 UTC, we saw a 15 minute period during which traffic dropped to only 0.2% of normal.

What Happened?

The Syrian Minister of Information is being reported as saying that the government did not disable the Internet, but instead the outage was caused by a cable being cut. Specifically: “It is not true that the state cut the Internet. The terrorists targeted the Internet lines, resulting in some regions being cut off.” From our investigation, that appears unlikely to be the case.

To begin, all connectivity to Syria, not just some regions, has been cut. The exclusive provider of Internet access in Syria is the state-run Syrian Telecommunications Establishment. Their network AS number is AS29386. The following network providers typically provide connectivity from Syria to the rest of the Internet: PCCW and Turk Telekom as the primary providers with Telecom Italia and TATA for additional capacity. When the outage happened, the BGP routes to Syrian IP space were all simultaneously withdrawn from all of Syria’s upstream providers. The effect of this is that networks were unable to route traffic to Syrian IP space, effectively cutting the country off the Internet.

Syria has 4 physical cables that connect it to the rest of the Internet. Three are undersea cables that land in the city of Tartous, Syria. The fourth is an over-land cable through Turkey. In order for a whole-country outage, all four of these cables would have had to been cut simultaneously. That is unlikely to have happened.

Watching the Shutdown Happen

One of our network engineers recorded the following video of network routes being withdrawn. Syrian Telecommunications (AS29386) is represented by the red dot in the middle of the video. The lines represent routes to the Syrian upstream providers.

Beginning at 1026 UTC, routes were withdrawn for PCCW. The routing shifted primarily to Turk Telekom. Routes to Telecom Italia and TATA were also withdrawn, but has less of an impact. Then, at 1029 UTC, routes were withdrawn for Turk Telekom. After that, Syria was effectively cut off from the Internet. (Note that the remaining path that appears to be present in the video is an anomaly. We have confirmed that it is not actually active.)

While we cannot know for sure, our network team estimates that Syria likely has a small number of edge routers. All the edge routers are controlled by Syrian Telecommunications. The systematic way in which routes were withdrawn suggests that this was done through updates in router configurations, not through a physical failure or cable cut.

What Syrians Were Surfing Before the Internet Was Turned Off

The last four sites on CloudFlare that received requests from Syria in the seconds before access was cut were:

  • fotoobook.com - a photo sharing blog
  • aliqtisadi.com - a Syrian news site
  • madinah.com - a Muslim-oriented social network
  • to2.xxx - a porn site (warning: not safe for work)

In other words, traffic from Syrians accessing the Internet in the moments before they were cut off from the rest of the world looks remarkably similar to traffic from any part of the world.

As we have posted about recently, we don’t believe our role is to take sides in political conflicts. However, we do believe it is our mission to build a better Internet where everyone can have a voice and access information. It is therefore deeply troubling to the CloudFlare team when we see an entire nation cut off from the ability to access and report information. Our thoughts are with the Syrian people and we hope connectivity, and peace, will be quickly restored.

Foreign intervention undermined by #Assad peace deal (by @corbettreport) - #Syria

Damascus has accepted Kofi Annan’s six-point plan to stop bloodshed in the country, a spokesman for the UN envoy to Syria announced. Kofi Annan has praised Damascus’s acceptance of the plan as “an important initial step” towards ending violence in the country and creating an environment to start a dialogue between the regime and the Syrian opposition. To talk more about Syria RT is joined by James Corbett, an independent journalist who’s written extensively on the Middle East.

#Syria: the Middle East's tipping point

NASSAR IBRAHIM FOR THE ALTERNATIVE INFORMATION CENTER (AIC)

The AIC is an internationally oriented, progressive, joint Palestinian-Israeli activist organization. It is engaged in dissemination of information, political advocacy, grassroots activism and critical analysis of the Palestinian and Israeli societies as well as the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.

February 4 - The struggle for Syria isn’t just about Syria—it’s the struggle for a free, democratic Middle East versus one that lives under the yoke of American and Israeli hegemony.

The conflict in Syria has reached its tipping point. At this level, it is no longer acceptable or reasonable to continue playing in a gray area in the name of diplomacy, as the struggle on Syria has a crucial significance from various strategic points of views.

The importance of the Syrian question has to be found in Syria’s key-role in the regional geostrategic pattern. Its position is directly intertwined with the confrontations we will witness in the Arab world for the next decade, whose results will in turn be strongly affected by the transformation happening in Syria. To be clear, the moves we are witnessing nowadays will influence the fate of a number of regional and global balances on more than one axis.

From the moment that the Arab League made the decision to suspend Syria’s membership, entailing a series of sanctions against the Syrian people, the clashes happening in Syria have moved to another level. This became even clearer with the second proposed UN resolution—calling for a democratic transition and for Bashar Al Assad to step down—which was stopped by Russia and China’s vetoes last Saturday for the second time in four months. There have been two attempts to prepare the ground for a military intervention – that the US, European, and Arab countries would like to see and that 13 out of 15 UN Security Council members voted for. Such fervor reminds of the international climate before the war against Iraq began in 2003.

With the recent developments, the façade has tumbled down disclosing the real goals hidden behind different masks, revealing that the slogans demanding freedom, democracy, and human rights have been used as a battering-ram by the advocates for an intervention to break Syria. The objective seems clear: depriving the country of its role and the Syrian people of their will.

#TeaMp0isoN Leaks Syrian Military Bank Accounts

A bank check allegedly leaked from the Syrian military

Enlarge picture The famous hacktivist collective TeaMp0isoN continues to hack websites that belong to governments they consider corrupt and violent. Their latest job targeted the Syrian military, leaking tons of information that could give someone access to bank accounts.

“Last few days I was looking at what’s happening in Syria, crimes, killing, and it’s all done by Syrian government. We need YOU people to open your eyes, and we need you to complain to your government about this, because they are not preventing this,” Phantom said.

The first part of the massive data leak comprises image files representing scanned bank checks, invoices, and bank account numbers written down on pieces of paper. Their origin is uncertain, but most of the checks bare the name of the world-renowned electronics manufacturer Dell.

For a skilled individual, the data may be enough to commit fraudulent activities.

“That’s why this release is coming out. We will have govts to look at what we, 99%, can do. Nothing is secure anymore, their servers are compromised, we are using their tactics against them, we made them fear us, we made them notice [expletive] that is done in their dark rooms, and all of their choices that are destructive for this world.”

It seems as the members of TeaMp0isoN are committed to doing their best in helping out people in poor countries where the governments respond to protests with violence.

Not long ago, they managed to leak 26,000 Israeli credit cards which they used to make donations to Palestinian charities and then they showed their support for the Nigerian people by hacking into some major government sites, obtaining and publishing highly sensitive data from their servers.

They’re also the ones responsible for hacking a United Nations website and the site of the telecoms company T-Mobile.

“Human Rights” Groups and the Pretext for War in #Syria (by corbettreport)

The Arab League has announced it’s reached a deal with Syria on easing the country’s long-running political crisis. The agreement urges Damascus to immediately withdraw security forces from the streets, release jailed demonstrators, and start dialogue with the opposition. Syria also agreed to allow rights groups and Arab League watchdogs into the country. But the U.S. still says it wants to see President Assad resign. Independent journalist James Corbett says the Western focus on Syria is part of a much bigger game.

بعض الأخبار من دير الزور

The Syrian Revolution has come to Deir Ezzor. For too long, the Syrian Army and Assad’s thugs, the Shabeeha, have used brutal violence and intimidation tactics to make the city’s inhabitants fearful of opposing the Assad regime. وصلت الثورة إلى دير الزور… ولزمن طويل، كانت القوات الأسدية والشبيحة تستعمل العنف الوحشي وتكتيكات التخويف لتجعل السكان يخافون من معارضة النظام الأسدي. As citizens of Deir Ezzor, you cannot be forced into silence and fear. You are proud and strong Syrian people, and you deserve freedom and liberty from your oppressive government. Recently, despite the extreme heat, more than 30,000 demonstrators marched in the streets of Deir Ezzor to demand greater freedoms and democracy for all of Syria. Despite the city’s cries for freedom from oppression, Assad continues to wage a bloody war in the streets. His forces have been seen detaining and beating innocent citizens and firing live ammunition on crowds of demonstrators. Assad’s violence has even claimed the lives of children. Recently a child was shot by a sniper in Al-Quria, Deir Ezzor on 23 August 2011. 2011 Brothers and sisters of Deir Ezzor, we stand with you as you rise to meet this continued assault on your humanity… The world will know your strength as you rise to free the soul of Syria from Assad’s tyranny. Safety Advice
brought to you by
The Free Syrian
Computer Society

Bashar is a little busy these days, so the Anonymous legion decided to bring you some tips instead. We’ll get to the tech details, but above all you must:

Bashar al-Assad - founder of the Syrian Computer Society
History’s first geek despot.

…because unless you’ve taken precautions, the regime records every movement you make online. This information is personally identifiable to you: your social media, your Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, everything. Using technology from Blue Coat Systems (USA), your entire internet life is being stored, permanently, for state intelligence to analyse. This isn’t just a theory. It has been happening for months.

Political activists and ordinary people are already disappearing for sharing their opinions online so it’s essential for the sake of you and your family that you are using a safe connection. Whoever you are, it’s time to brush up on your personal security basics:

  1. Always use HTTPS where available, especially on social media (Facebook, Twitter), and email (GMail, Hotmail). Anything containing passwords, confidential or personal information. Before you log in to a website ensure you see https:// and not http:// as illustrated below in Internet Explorer. This one simple rule will prevent most spying (however, it does not prevent them from knowing the site you went to).

the right way to do thingsthe wrong way to do thingsthe worst way to do things

Move your mouse over these images and spot the differences. The third image illustrates a phishing attack, with a page pretending to be Facebook. These are regularly posted on anti-government Facebook pages, so beware.

  2. Next, if you are using Internet Explorer, you should get a newer and safer web browser! We recommend you install Firefox due to the extensive range of security plugins, fast response to new threats, and protection against phishing. Lets see the same situations in Firefox:

the right way to do thingsthe wrong way to do thingsthe worst way to do things

As you can see, Firefox makes it clearer you have a secure connection by displaying the owner of the certificate in a blue or green box next to the address. It also helps you spot phishing pages by fading the less relevant parts of the address. Always look for the darker part to identify a website.

We strongly recommend you install the excellent Firefox plugin HTTPS Everywhere (direct link) by the Electronic Frontier Foundation. It will automatically use a secure connection on over 1000 websites.

  3. If you’re undertaking risky activities like planning protests, reporting on events, or assisting the wounded, you should invest time in setting up a fully anonymous connection. If you can get a VPN - awesome! Use it and you will be well hidden. For most of us though - Tor is sufficient. Put simply, Tor is a volunteer network of servers which bounce your communications around the Internet, hiding where you are. It’s important that you still use HTTPS, in case of man-in-the-middle attacks, but combined with the steps above, it provides good security.

Tor has guides to help you install it. Unfortunately as part of their censorship effort, Tor is blocked by the Syrian government, so you will need a bridge to access the network.

Other Tor users and Telecomix #opsyria can help you find and install one which works in Syria.

Click to watch a video on installing Tor bridges (English)

Be vigilant, and look after one another online!

Burn it down: Download Auto-BAHN Emergency Messaging App for Android

Burn it down: Download Auto-BAHN Emergency Messaging App for Android

Download Auto-BAHN Emergency Messaging App for Android Mobile phones could soon be helping in the aftermath of disasters by becoming an ad-hoc message passing network.

Computer scientist Thomas Wilhelm has developed software that lets data hop from phone to phone.

Messages sent via the application gradually migrates towards its intended target to keep communication going when other routes are closed.

The system could also help protesters in nations that routinely switch off networks to quell unrest.

Called Auto-BAHN, the project was unveiled at the DefCon hacker conference in Las Vegas in early August.

To pass messages the software uses the Bluetooth short-range radio technology and wi-fi that are ubiquitous on smartphones.

After a disaster, owners of phones that have the Auto-BAHN application can search for other users of it and pass on a message. Once sent, the message propagates across the network of other Auto-BAHN using phones until it gets to its intended target.

It could prove helpful during disasters and alert emergency services to the location of survivors.

Mr Wilhelm has produced an application that puts Auto-BAHN on Android phones and is working on one for the iPhone.

The applications are just to prove the concept works, he said, as he is trying to convince smartphone makers to have a similar system included as standard on their gadgets.

International hacktivists help #Syria citizens circumvent Internet censorship - #OpSyria

Syrian citizen protestAnti-government protestesters in Syria are being attacked by the authorities

As the government cracks down on protesters in Syria, hacker groups from abroad are helping people to get access to the Web and to communicate safely despite surveillance and repression.

Human rights groups and the international community are calling for an arms embargo and an end to government repression in Syria, which has resulted in almost 2,000 deaths since March.

Like in Egypt and Tunisia earlier this year, Syria has responded to the uprising not only with violence, but also by putting its citizens under surveillance and censoring the internet.

What such regimes didn’t count on was that international internet activists would step in and fight back.

Since the Arab Spring began, hacktivists have been building ad hoc telecommunications systems all over the Middle East to help citizens get information on what’s going on there out of these countries.

When the government shut down the Internet, Telecomix helped Egyptians by getting them access to dial-up modems.Telecomix logoTactics of ‘Telecomix’ online activists are less controversial than those of the group Anonymous

Rather than describing themselves as a group, members say Telecomix is an idea or a working group where international hackers – or hacktivists – get together to collaborate on particular issues.

Their aims are to provide free and secure communication, anonymity on the net, freedom of speech and news via their Twitter account. And they’ve stepped up the game by entering the fray in the Middle East.

Under Surveillance

Distributing videos and sharing information about anti-government protests in Syria is incredibly difficult because the government has cracked down on all forms of telecommunications. It’s become dangerous to post a picture, video or even make a phone call to try to tell others what’s going on. One Syrian protester who asked to remain anonymous said via encrypted email that Iranian experts have been helping the regime spy on people.

“The Syrian government and branches of intelligence are exploiting this crisis to develop their ability to try to control our words and hopes. We know they are using strong programs to do this,” said the Syrian protestor.

“In addition, when they arrest an activist, they try to take over his or her accounts and passwords through torture, especially Facebook accounts. So they can catch his friends who support the revolution,” said the protestor, whose identity must be protected.

Maha Abu Shama, a Syrian campaigner from Amnesty International, said that Syrian authorities are also using personal statements from social networking sites against people.

“If people write things on their Facebook page or in some correspondences that are critical of the authorities, if they happen to be arrested, these written statements on their Facebook or Internet accounts could be used against them as evidence,” said Abu Shama.

Safety Guidelines

To help Syrians keep safe on the internet, international hacktivist group Telecomix is giving them practical advice. Stephan Urbach explains the basic rules.

Two members of TelecomixStephan Urbach (left) and Jonatan Walck (right) of Telecomix

“Safety guideline number one is to use, whenever possible, https – SSL encrypted connections. If you want to chat with people, use an instant messenger with OTR – Off The Record – it’s a protocol to encrypt your communication,” explained Telecomix member Stephan Urbach, who is from Germany.

To secure emails, people can use PGP – Pretty Good Privacy – and Tor to obfuscate their surfing. Urbach said that if people follow these steps, it makes it difficult for anyone to read their messages.

While the Syrian government hasn’t shut down the Internet completely, Jonatan Walck, a Swedish hacktivist with Telecomix, said that it varies from city to city. Connections are often unreliable and may go down for hours or days. Human rights groups suspect that these cutoffs are done strategically to coincide with attacks by the security forces.

Despite knowing that the Internet is under surveillance, many people are still using it, often in an insecure way.

“Just as in Egypt, there’s a risk of people being tracked. The government is listening,” said Walck, adding, “So we listen and see when people come in and contact us, and we try to make sure that they don’t get caught for it.”

Urbach said with a laugh thatessentially around 10 Telecomix members are providing tech support for an entire country.

But it’s the seriousness of the situation that motivated him to act.

“I just fear for the people that they are getting harmed. I am sitting in Europe, everything is fine for me. I am not there, fearing for my life. So if we can help the people feeling a little bit more secure and getting a little bit more secure, then it’s worth it,” said Urbach.

Beyond the border

The Syrian government has imposed a media blackout, so it’s very difficult to find out what is actually happening in the country.

But for Telecomix, this is just another challenge to be overcome. Recently they helped distribute an amateur video of a peaceful demonstration where police officers assaulted protestors, and one person was shot and killed.

Telecomix not only helped him get this information out of the country, but protected the Syrian’s anonymity. Yet every day, it’s getting more and more difficult to get this kind of information out.

“We do figure out one way or another, that they safely can get it outside of the Syrian border, and then we can of course publish it so it’s up for everyone,” said Walck.

Dr. Asiem El Difraoui, researcher at the German Institute for International and Security Affairs, said that Telecomix and Anonymous are making a huge difference in the Middle East.

Screenshot of hacked website‘Anonymous’ hackers brought down the Syrian Defense Ministry’s website this August

Both Telecomix and Anonymous try to help people directly, although Anonymous has gained a lot of media attention in recent months for its high-profile attacks against companies like Sony. But they’re not just after corporations. Anonymous members also attacked the official websites of the oppressive Tunisian regime.

“They really hacked into governmental websites, brought the presidential websites down and so on,” said El Difraoui, and added “Anonymous is not as purely destructive as we think. The French Anonymous members, for instance, helped the Tunisians also to maintain communications in the same way as Telecomix.”

But the Syrian government has learned from Egypt, and instead of just shutting down the internet, they’re also using social networks for their own agenda.

“They try to create some solidarity movement on Facebook and the other new media, and use YouTube as well, for showing alleged atrocities by the Syrian opposition, which they deem terrorists,” said El Difraoui.

For Telecomix, circumventing Syrian censorship and surveillance is a constant game of cat and mouse. But for the Syrian people, their hard work and practical safety tips are really important.

“The Telecomix team helps us, emotionally and physically. They give us advice on how to be safe on the internet, dos and don’ts, and they help us to spread the word,” wrote a Syrian protestor via encrypted email. “[Telecomix] are like one family and they are always there for support and assistance. They are people [with] a high degree of humanity and responsibility.”

Hacktivists also under surveillance

Due to their activities, Telecomix and Anonymous are also getting attention from the authorities. When the FBI conducted a sweep last month of Anonymous members, Stephan Ubrach from Telecomix received a letter from the Federal Criminal Police Office saying that he was no longer under surveillance.

With the recent riots in London, Urbach warns that surveillance is also increasing in Western democratic countries, where leaders are contemplating Internet and mobile network kill switches.

“What we are doing is showing that if they do it, we evolve and find ways to circumvent these censorship methods and hopefully our politicians in Europe learn from that, that they don’t do it here,” concluded Urbach.

#OpSyria: The censorship in #Syria laid bare

Today Telecomix , Fhimt Reflets.info and have carefully studied the infrastructure of Internet censorship established by the Syrian regime. We have made some wonderful discoveries. In a small series of upcoming articles, we detail the mechanisms used by the Syrian regime to block sites or even forcing non-secure connections on social networks to better control the population … and all this with the complicity an American company, BlueCoat .

We visited Syria, guided by our friends Telecomix. So we have the privilege of observers to a country where digital information has no right of citizenship. In this sense, it seems legitimate to share vacation photos with you, especially with the Syrian people. With fo0, we had already set the tone a little, a few months ago with our little trip to Bahrain . But nothing like this, the Syrian regime is full of gems worthy of a blooper from Defcon.

The information we have found are freely accessible on the Internet critical infrastructure of communication and information, major local businesses, service providers … do not rush, there will be something for everyone.

The nature of the data on which we got our hands leaves no doubt about the architecture and the type of filter used by the Syrian regime. First impression is that the regime of Bashar al-Assad would have been well advised to send their teams to train in Tunisia. The technical level of the Syrian team is simply disastrous. Censorship at the national level based on a solution which we will discuss further in the coming hours. Outrageously intrusive, authoritarian used for the device of censorship Bashar showed us her little below, you can count on us for you to enjoy.

The evidence we have in our possession are evidence of a blockage to secure authentication of communication channels like MSN, Yahoo Messenger, or chatting on Facebook. The Syrian who use these services should be aware that their passwords are known to the authorities and that their communications are intercepted.

Reflets.info therefore supported Telecomix Fhima and to tell you the beautiful story of a government censorship undermined by 5 gus in a garage.

Stay tuned ;)
