Bradley Manning, the US army officer accused of linking information to WikiLeaks, has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize by the group The Movement of the Icelandic Parliament.

Manning is faced with charges that include aiding the enemy, wrongfully causing intelligence to be published on the internet, theft of public property or records, transmitting defense information and fraud and related activity in connection with computers, CNN reported. The former Army private could face life in prison if convicted of these charges.

Despite his long list of charges, the parliamentary group The Movement of the Icelandic Parliament submitted a letter to the Nobel Peace Prize committee for the 2012 prize for his “individual effort to have an impact for peace in our world,” the letter stated.

“The revelations – including video documentation of an incident in which American soldiers gunned down Reuters journalists in Iraq – have helped to fuel a worldwide discussion about America’s overseas engagements, civilian casualties of war, imperialistic manipulations, and rules of engagement,” the letter stated. “Citizens worldwide owe a great debt to the WikiLeaks whistleblower for shedding light on these issues, and so I urge the Committee to award this prestigious prize to accused whistleblower Bradley Manning.”

Manning, 24, served the US military in Baghdad in late 2009 to early 2010 and allegedly leaked more than 700,000 secret government documents from Iraq and Afghanistan, hundreds of thousands of diplomatic cables and a combat video that shows an Army helicopter attack in 2007, the Associated Press reported. His defense has said Manning had access to the computers with others in the workplace and was emotionally distressed since he was a gay soldier and homosexuals were barred from serving openly in the US military at the time.

The letter nominating him for a Nobel Peace Prize states the former soldier deserves it since he brought to light “a long history of corruption, war crimes, and imperialism by the United States government in international dealings,” which they believe fueled the Arab Spring uprising and contributed to the withdrawal of troops in Iraq in 2011.

Manning has been in prison for over a year and was court martialed on all charges last Friday, the military said in a statement, CNN reported. A military judge will be appointed to provide the date for the date for his arraignment, motion hearings and trial.

A Norwegian Perspective on the EU Nobel Prize: “Insult to the Peoples of Europe and the Whole World” | Global Research

nobel

The European Union (EU) is not a peace project. The EU is not a “People’s Europe”.  The EU is and has always been the Europe of the monopolies.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee continues unabated to scandalize the Nobel Peace Prize and the Nobel testament to a degree that evokes head-shaking and embarrassment abroad as well as at home. Under the leadership of former Norwegian Labour party leader and current Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Thorbjørn Jagland, the committee is already guilty of handing the award to the belligerent U.S.  President Obama. And now to the EU!

Supposedly, the reason for awarding the prize to the EU is that “the Union and its predecessors have spent more than six decades helping to promote peace and reconciliation, democracy and human rights in Europe.”

This is like spitting the peoples of Europe right in the face. What “human rights?” More than 25 million people across the European Union are struck by mass unemployment.

Half of the young people are without work and countries such as Greece and Spain are being battered with welfare cuts and misery to an extreme extent, with the prospect of even worse attacks to come.

The “national” governments in the most crisis-ridden member states have become administrative bodies. They are threatened and instructed by the troika – the European Commission, the European Central Bank and the IMF – to cut funding for schools, pensions, hospitals and wages down to the bone.
A war project

The EU is supposed to have created “peace” in the Balkans. Here we are speaking of the same EU, with Germany as a particularly active player, that encouraged and provoked civil war in Yugoslavia in the 90′s! Since then we have witnessed how especially France and Britain, but also other European powers, have been the main aggressors in relation to the bombardment of Libya in 2011. At this moment they are using a similar threatening rhetoric against Syria.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee mocks the European workers and peoples. But it also mocks the people and workers of Norway, who by no means regard the Union as a peace project. That is one of the reasons that seventy percent of Norwegians say no to Norwegian EU membership.

We ask the peoples of Europe and the whole world for forgiveness and beg they understand that the political elite and the ruling class of Norway does not represent or respect the people of Norway; they only respect and obey big capital, the U.S. and the European Union bosses.

The Europe of monopolies is an imperialist structure with two possible outcomes. Either it could become a “successful” imperialist union under German leadership that exploits workers at home and abroad and wages war against other states and peoples. Alternatively, the contradictions between the Union’s member states and capital groupings will lead to fractures, trade wars and perhaps open war between the great powers themselves.

Whatever the final outcome, the EU is anything but a project for peace.

#ICELAND NOBEL PEACE PRIZE #BradleyManning Nominated! #OTB

NB:  We’ve burnt our Twitter account out on this!  Now it’d down to YOU:  get the word out!!  Use the Tweet button to the right of this writing, or the one that appears at the bottom of post!
STOP PRESS:  Just announced; Bradley Manning is to be charged with ALL OFFENCES!

And so the rumour is true.  The heroic Icelandic Parliamentary group “The Movement” has nominated PFC Bradley Manning for the 2012 Nobel Peace Prize.  Here is the full statement made by their Representative Birgitta Jónsdóttir, Member of the Icelandic Parliament.

“February 1st 2012 the entire parliamentary group of The Movement of the Icelandic Parliament nominated Private Bradley Manning for the Nobel Peace Prize. Following is the reasoning we sent to the committee explaining why we felt compelled to nominate Private Bradley Manning for this important recognition of an individual effort to have an impact for peace in our world.

Our letter to the Nobel Peace Prize Committee:

We have the great honor of nominating Private First Class Bradley Manning for the 2012 Nobel Peace Prize. Manning is a soldier in the United States army who stands accused of releasing hundreds of thousands of documents to the whistleblower website WikiLeaks. The leaked documents pointed to a long history of corruption, war crimes, and imperialism by the United States government in international dealings. These revelations have fueled democratic uprising around the world, including a democratic revolution in Tunisia. According to journalists, his alleged actions helped motivate the democratic Arab Spring movements, shed light on secret corporate influence on our foreign policies, and most recently contributed to the Obama Administration agreeing to withdraw all U.S.troops from the occupation in Iraq.

Bradley Manning has been incarcerated for well over a year by the U.S. government without a trial. He spent over ten months of that time period in solitary confinement, conditions which experts worldwide have criticized as torturous. Juan Mendez, the United Nations’ Special Rapporteur on Torture and Cruel, Inhuman and Degrading Treatment or Punishment, has repeatedly requested and been denied a private meeting with Manning to assess his conditions.

The documents made public by WikiLeaks should never have been kept from public scrutiny. The revelations – including video documentation of an incident in which American soldiers gunned down Reuters journalists in Iraq – have helped to fuel a worldwide discussion about America’s overseas engagements, civilian casualties of war, imperialistic manipulations, and rules of engagement. Citizens worldwide owe a great debt to the WikiLeaks whistleblower for shedding light on these issues, and so I urge the Committee to award this prestigious prize to accused whistleblower Bradley Manning.

Sincerely,
Birgitta Jónsdóttir
Margrét Tryggvadóttir
Þór Saari
Members of the Icelandic Parliament for The Movement”

Bradley Manning and Julian Assange Both Nominated for Nobel Peace Prize
The Nobel Peace Prize nominees for 2011 recognize a number of activists, among them Julian Assange, Bradley Manning, Wael Ghonim, Tunisian blogger Lina Ben Mhenni, and Egyptian Israa Abdel Fattah together with the April 6 Youth Movement.
Thus the Arab Spring, as it has been termed, is well-represented in the Nobel Peace Prize nominees this year, and with good reason: It was a remarkable grassroots revolution that is still changing the North African and Middle East dynamic and, indeed, the world.
Much of this, however, might not have been possible but for the actions of Bradley Manning and Julian Assange’s WikiLeaks.
Manning allegedly leaked diplomatic cables and video (of a 2007 Apache helicopter attack) to WikiLeaks. Manning had access to SIPRNet and the Joint Worldwide Intelligence Communications System from his workstation in Iraq. His reason for leaking the documents? Manning wrote to former hacker Adrian Lamo, “I want people to see the truth… regardless of who they are … because without information, you cannot make informed decisions as a public.”
Assange, as founder and public face of WikiLeaks, took these documents—in addition to other diplomatic cables and documents—and published them on WikiLeaks—an act the old New York Times would have done without hesitation in the Pentagon Papers-era, but seems quite reluctant to do in the 21st century.
And while a Nobel Peace Prize nomination might not help Manning avoid prison time or get Assange released from house arrest and his legal charade, it certainly is a form of vindication for both men; many people across the world admire their principled stand.
If it had not been for WikiLeaks publishing the leaked diplomatic cables, the Arab Spring might not have been possible. The leaks were the catalyst, as Amnesty International stated, supplying the momentum in Tunisia and Egypt, for example. Even Retired U.S. Army Reserve Colonel Ann Wright, in a recent Stars & Stripes editorial, has called Wikileaks “a critically important tool for those who seek to uphold basic human-rights standards and the professional conduct of U.S. military forces.”
As such, both Manning and Assange deserve serious consideration for the Nobel Peace Prize.
