Irish police arrest former head of Anglo Irish bank

DUBLIN (Reuters) - Irish police on Tuesday arrested the former chief executive of Anglo Irish Bank, Sean FitzPatrick, to face charges related to an investigation into the failed lender synonymous with Ireland’s financial meltdown, a source close to the probe said.

Fitzpatrick, the face of Ireland’s banking crisis after serving as chief executive of Anglo for almost two decades, has been arrested twice in connection with the long-running probe, but has yet to be charged.

He was arrested early on Tuesday at Dublin Airport and will appear in court today for the first time to face charges related to “financial irregularities,” the source said.

Police said in a statement that a man in his 60s had been arrested in the Dublin area and was due to appear in court after two former top executives at Anglo Irish Bank were charged on Monday as part of the investigation.

Ireland’s Office of the Director of Corporate Enforcement (ODCE) and the police have been investigating the actions of the bank for over three years, including loans given to a group of investors, referred to by local media as the “golden circle”, as well as whether deposits were used to mask large withdrawals.

Anglo, recently renamed the Irish Banking Resolution Corporation (IBRC), is slowly being wound down after years of reckless lending left the state with a 30 billion euro bill, almost half of the amount needed to bail out the entire sector.

Voters have been angered that nobody has been jailed for the mismanagement of banks that helped fuel the runaway “Celtic Tiger” economy.

On Tuesday 27th March Ben Gilroy, John Squires and ‘People for Economic Justice’ served a summons on the Irish government to answer charges of illegal activity over the bank bailout. The bailout is illegal under Bunreacht Na hEireann, the Irish Constitution.
It is also illegal under international law.
An injunction was applied for to prevent the payment of a €3.1 billion euro Anglo bond due to be paid this Saturday 31st March 2012.
The judge has given two weeks for the State to respond.

Please support Ben and John and People for Economic Justice in any way you can. The economic situation in Ireland has been caused by illegal activity. Those responsible must be held responsible, and the payments must be stopped.
Fine Gael were elected on the promise of stopping this madness but have not done so.

  • It’s not what I would call common knowledge but, did you here the one about the involvement of war profiteers in the Irish and Scottish and UK censuses? It’s no joke! CACI and Lockheed Martin have been contracted to work these data collection operations and have been for some time. Leaving aside the Scottish and UK cases for a minute, the Irish case is particularly interesting. The contract was given in July 2009 and CACI (UK) issued a press release in January 2010.

    No major media outlets here have bothered to report on this. Thankfully The Journal and Newswhip picked up on it last week and gave it some exposure, after activists connected the dots following news in The Observer about the Scottish boycott. But this is hardly enough. As a media activist I was shocked to learn of this, given that I know about the CACI stories from Iraq. I was even more surprised to learn that CACI were involved in the 2001 and 2006 censuses here also.

    There is a lot to say here and although this is a lengthy post with a
    diverse range of sources and perspectives, it barely scratches the
    surface. I will post a more in depth analysis of this over the coming days.

Thousands protest against Irish bailout

More than 100,000 Irish citizens took to the streets of Dublin today to protest against the international bailout and four years of austerity.

Despite overnight snow storms and freezing temperatures, huge crowds have gathered in O’Connell Street to demonstrate against the cuts aimed at driving down Ireland’s colossal national debt.

So far the march has passed off peacefully although there is a huge Garda presence with up to 700 officers on duty working alongside 250 security guards for the Irish Congress of Trade Unions.

Among the marchers there is deep anger that most of the more than €80bn (£67bn) from the EU and the International Monetary Fund will be given to shore up Ireland’s ailing banks.

Marching in the rally was Irish builder Mick Wallace who has had to lay off 100 workers due to the crash in the construction industry. Wallace said it was time the Irish became more militant.

“We should be more like the French and get onto the streets more often. Because our politicians go over to Europe and tell the EU that our people do not demonstrate, they don’t take to the streets. It’s time we changed that and openly opposed what is going on,” he said.

Placards carried by the marchers reflect the mood of anger and humiliation at having to be bailed out by the EU and IMF. One was designed to look like an estate agent’s billboard and read: “3,599 square miles For Sale. Full Planning Permission Granted”.

The protest has not halted at the GPO in Dublin, the scene of the 1916 rising where trade unionists and workers are denouncing the government’s cost cutting programme which will take €15bn out of the Irish economy over the next four years.
