STOP PRESS:  Just announced; Bradley Manning is to be charged with ALL OFFENCES!

And so the rumour is true.  The heroic Icelandic Parliamentary group “The Movement” has nominated PFC Bradley Manning for the 2012 Nobel Peace Prize.  Here is the full statement made by their Representative Birgitta Jónsdóttir, Member of the Icelandic Parliament.

“February 1st 2012 the entire parliamentary group of The Movement of the Icelandic Parliament nominated Private Bradley Manning for the Nobel Peace Prize. Following is the reasoning we sent to the committee explaining why we felt compelled to nominate Private Bradley Manning for this important recognition of an individual effort to have an impact for peace in our world.

Our letter to the Nobel Peace Prize Committee:

We have the great honor of nominating Private First Class Bradley Manning for the 2012 Nobel Peace Prize. Manning is a soldier in the United States army who stands accused of releasing hundreds of thousands of documents to the whistleblower website WikiLeaks. The leaked documents pointed to a long history of corruption, war crimes, and imperialism by the United States government in international dealings. These revelations have fueled democratic uprising around the world, including a democratic revolution in Tunisia. According to journalists, his alleged actions helped motivate the democratic Arab Spring movements, shed light on secret corporate influence on our foreign policies, and most recently contributed to the Obama Administration agreeing to withdraw all U.S.troops from the occupation in Iraq.

Bradley Manning has been incarcerated for well over a year by the U.S. government without a trial. He spent over ten months of that time period in solitary confinement, conditions which experts worldwide have criticized as torturous. Juan Mendez, the United Nations’ Special Rapporteur on Torture and Cruel, Inhuman and Degrading Treatment or Punishment, has repeatedly requested and been denied a private meeting with Manning to assess his conditions.

The documents made public by WikiLeaks should never have been kept from public scrutiny. The revelations – including video documentation of an incident in which American soldiers gunned down Reuters journalists in Iraq – have helped to fuel a worldwide discussion about America’s overseas engagements, civilian casualties of war, imperialistic manipulations, and rules of engagement. Citizens worldwide owe a great debt to the WikiLeaks whistleblower for shedding light on these issues, and so I urge the Committee to award this prestigious prize to accused whistleblower Bradley Manning.

Sincerely,
Birgitta Jónsdóttir
Margrét Tryggvadóttir
Þór Saari
Members of the Icelandic Parliament for The Movement”

March 23 2010,

Private Bradley Manning, a 23-year-old Army intelligence analyst, was arrested and incarcerated on suspicion of leaking classified United States documents about Iraq and Afghanistan wars, as well as diplomatic cables of the United States embassies. There was also a video in the leaked documents now known to the world as Collateral Murder.

This video shows two American airmen in an AH-64 Apache helicopter lying to their ground controller about the presence of armed insurgents on the ground in Baghdad. The ground controller then gives them permission to fire on the Iraqi civilians. 12 civilians are killed, two of which were Reuters journalists.

Arrested in Baghdad and jailed in Kuwait, Bradley Manning was then moved to the military brig at Quantico Virginia and while kept in complete isolation allegedly awaiting trial, he was subject to treatment described by hundreds of legal experts as torture.

Bradley Manning still waits for a pre-trial hearing one year later.

Locked in a 10 by 6 foot cell for 23 hours a day without sheets, a pillow, personal effects or his glasses, and forced to sleep naked during the mandatory 7 hour sleep cycle. All of this abuse was committed under the pretense of Manning’s alleged suicide risk.

Bradley Manning’s lawyer David Coombs, had said that it was a violation of the military rules, because Quantico’s psychologist denied that Manning is suicidal.

Quantico Brig violated PFC Manning’s constitutional right to due process. The facts surrounding PFC Manning’s pretrial confinement at Quantico make it clear that his detention was not in compliance with legal and regulatory.

April 20 2010

Bradley Manning was moved to the Fort Leavenworth prison in Kansas following criticism over his nine month detention at the Quantico brig. The move was intended to show that the treatment of Manning will be much fairer now that the complaints registered have made their public and legal ‘mark’, but they did not tell us that along with the move came an apparent order for PFC Manning’s indefinate incarcination.

One of the several charges that have been put to paper but not yet read in court is cooperating with the enemy, a charge that makes Manning eligible for the death penalty. But the fact is that the cables and video, supposedly leaked by Bradley Manning, have shown the world terrifying acts that must be condemned.

Acts of what have commonly come to be called whistleblowing are driven by technologically changing times, ethics, and morals that we can readily observe when concerned people in the west seek a more just world while the moment shows that we have been deceived by our own leaders.

The truth is the pardonable innocence of Bradley Manning has been displayed by showing the world this information even if he is guilty according to the military justice system.

It was hidden but it should have been available to everyone. The United States government should have been honest and not censored or buried this information but instead released it and acted on it by investigating the perpetrators of the crimes shown in the video, not the whistleblowers.

the question we should all have in mind is: Who supports this hero?

Most people know and support Wikileaks and Julian Assange, but meanwhile, time is passing and Bradley Manning’s life is being wasted in jail… Heroic If he did release the Collateral Murder video, and incarcerated in inhumane conditions under false pretenses for a year if he wasn’t the one responsible.

Either way, it is glaringly obvious to all of us that Bradley Manning shouldn’t be the one in court as we can see when we view those cables and the atrocities he allegedly was exposing.

Free Bradley Manning!

Jail The Criminals Not The Whistleblowers!

We are Anonymous.
We are Legion.
We do not forgive.
We do not forget.
Expect us.

Once Upon A Time US Government Whistleblowers… #FreeBradley #FreeManning

Steve Kohn of National Whistleblowers Center offers an alternative to ignoring and intimidating whistle-blowers

HopkinsLast week the New York Times published a very well-written editorial piece written by Steve Kohn on the need to protectgovernment whistleblowers:

Today, the Obama administration is aggressively pursuing leakers. Bradley E. Manning, an Army private, has been imprisoned since May 2010 on suspicion of having passed classified data to the antisecrecy group WikiLeaks. Thomas A. Drake, a former official at the National Security Agency, pleaded guilty Friday to a misdemeanor of misusing the agency’s computer system by providing information to a newspaper reporter.

The tension between protecting true national security secrets and ensuring the public’s “right to know” about abuses of authority is not new. Indeed, the nation’s founders faced this very issue.

In the winter of 1777, months after the signing of the Declaration of Independence, the American warship Warren was anchored outside of Providence, R.I. On board, 10 revolutionary sailors and marines met in secret — not to plot against the king’s armies, but to discuss their concerns about the commander of the Continental Navy, Commodore Esek Hopkins. They knew the risks: Hopkins came from a powerful family; his brother was a former governor of Rhode Island and a signer of the declaration.

Hopkins had participated in the torture of captured British sailors; he “treated prisoners in the most inhuman and barbarous manner,” his subordinates wrote in a petition.

One whistle-blower, a Marine captain named John Grannis, was selected to present the petition to the Continental Congress, which voted on March 26, 1777, to suspend Hopkins from his post.

…

I think the historical example, the story, is enough to entice you to read the entire piece. It is a brief and very effective article, and I encourage you to read it here. And here is the action alert put out by Mr. Kohn’s National Whistleblowers Center: Protect Whistleblowers Like They Did in 1777

@exiledsurfer interviews @6 adrian lamo (by exiledsurfer)

[EDIT: THIS POST IS CROSS-REFERENCED HERE:  http://www.artificialeyes.tv/node/880 ]

Isn’t that always the way that it is? everything works until the moment that it is important to work…I had originally intended to record this conversation using the screen capture program ishowu, which has in the past functioned flawlessly for me, so i didnt even check it before starting the interview with Adrian Lamo [EDIT: THE #NWO SNITCH]. And i got the weirdest error ever…so rather than go through an explanation of what i tried to do to get it to work again under the stress of Adrian waiting for me on one battery for his laptop, i’ll just tell you what i did:

the ultra hack: putting a small snappy camera on a pack of cigarettes on my laptop, and shooting it from the screen. the vid quality sucks, but the sound is fine. The tech problem totally threw me off, and i can’t say this is my best interview- lets call it therefore a conversation - and it doesn’t include the first 15 minutes we talked, because i didn’t notice that the cam was on photo mode…

ach. But Lamo didn’t say anything in these first fifteen minutes that he didn’t repeat later in the conversation. the recording is uploaded UNEDITED, and UNREDACTED, in two parts, messed up as it is technically and incomplete due to me being out of it…

i apologize to you all, and to Lamo, for my total lack of competence; I would be fired at any organization for something like this, but i guess we all have our stories to tell about why shit went wrong.

I make NO comments here about what he talks about, in order not to prejudice your own opinion of what he has to say. The first part is 20 mins long, ending when Lamo’s battery died, part two is 31 mins long, after he borrowed a power cable from someone else in the room. The second part of the interview ends abruptly because the snappy cam battery died. Comments are disabled on my domain because i just don’t want to deal with the spam, if you have any comments regarding how i conducted the interview, or what you think about Adrian Lamo’s statements, please post them to me or him on twitter.

I remain critical of the choice that Adrian Lamo made to turn Bradley Manning over to the authorities, i still disagree with it. He makes his statements here, judge for yourself about his honesty with himself and with me. My motivation in doing speaking with Lamo is simple: I have read what he has to say, and read what others have reported that he has said, but it is always different to talk to someone directly. It is one thing to do art critical of someone, and another to talk to him face to face when you disagree with him. I tried to approach him neutrally, and allow him to say what he has to say without injecting my personal opinion into the discussion, although it is present. Once again, judge for yourself if i am supporting him or remaining critical.

#Obama echoes Richard Nixon on #WikiLeaks prisoner - #FreeBradley #FreeManning

The first time President Obama was publicly asked about Bradley Manning, the soldier accused of disclosing government secrets to WikiLeaks, his answer was reminiscent of George W. Bush.

The second time - when he declared Manning guilty without a trial - it was more like Richard Nixon.

Manning, a 23-year-old Army private, is charged with divulging hundreds of thousands of classified documents, including war logs from Afghanistan and Iraq and State Department diplomatic cables.

Until his transfer in late April to a military prison at Fort Leavenworth, Kan., Manning had been held for nine months at the Marine brig in Quantico, Va. Here is how attorney David Coombs, the only person allowed unmonitored visits, described his confinement there:

Held in an isolation cell for 23 hours a day; stripped of his clothing every night, purportedly for his own protection, and given a coarse smock to wear; required to stand naked at some roll calls; prohibited from sleeping between 5 a.m. and 8 p.m. and required to respond to guards’ queries every five minutes; also awakened and required to respond at night whenever guards couldn’t see his face.

The issue landed in Obama’s lap via P.J. Crowley, the State Department’s chief media spokesman and the only member of the administration known to have protested Manning’s treatment.

Answering a question at an MIT student seminar in March, Crowley called the conditions of Manning’s confinement “ridiculous and counterproductive and stupid.”

Asked about Crowley’s comments at a news conference the next day, Obama said the Pentagon had assured him that its procedures for Manning “are appropriate and are meeting our basic standards,” and that “some of this has to do with Pfc. Manning’s safety.”

Two days later, the State Department announced Crowley’s “resignation,” government-speak for signing a farewell note while being pushed out the window.

What was especially noteworthy about Obama’s comments was his reliance on the Pentagon’s assessment of its own conduct.

It called to mind Bush’s assertions that waterboarding suspected terrorists was legal because his handpicked lawyers had told him so. Or his acceptance of promises from countries like Morocco and Egypt that suspects delivered to them for interrogation after overseas abductions - the practice known as “extraordinary rendition” - would be treated humanely.

Obama’s assurances, at any rate, didn’t satisfy a group of Manning’s supporters, who burst into a protest song April 21 during the president’s $35,800-a-head fundraiser in San Francisco.

Later, one of the protesters asked Obama about Manning. According to a transcript of a cell phone recording, the president first replied that military secrecy laws apply to everyone.

“If I was to release stuff, information that I’m not authorized to release, I’m breaking the law,” Obama said. “We don’t individually make our own decisions about how the laws operate. …

“He (Manning) broke the law.”

The questioner then brought up Daniel Ellsberg, who leaked the Pentagon Papers study of the Vietnam War. That was different, Obama replied, because “what Ellsberg released wasn’t classified in the same way.”

There were at least three things wrong with Obama’s statements, in ascending order of importance:

— The president has the power to declassify any document and wouldn’t be “breaking the law” by releasing it.

— The Pentagon Papers were classified top secret, a more restrictive level than any of the material Manning is accused of leaking.

— Manning is still awaiting trial and is legally presumed innocent.

It’s the first time a U.S. president has made such a public comment since 1971, when Nixon declared that cult leader Charles Manson, then on trial, “was guilty, directly or indirectly, of eight murders.”

Manson was tried and convicted by a civilian jury. Manning will go before a panel of military officers ultimately responsible to the president.

Obama’s comments also raise the question of whether he looks at all criminal cases through the same lens or uses different standards depending on whether the government is alleged to be the victim or the victimizer.

This is, after all, the president who has declared that America needs to look forward, not backward, when asked about investigating former Bush administration officials for allegedly approving torture.

Obama, to be sure, has forbidden waterboarding and renounced torture. His administration also has prosecuted soldiers for killing civilians.

But while promising never to hide government wrongdoing with claims of secrecy, Obama has invoked the state-secrets defense in seeking dismissal of lawsuits challenging the Bush administration’s clandestine wiretapping and rendition programs - suits that alleged crimes by government officials.

His administration is prosecuting another media leak case, against former National Security Agency official Thomas Drake - whose supporters, like Manning’s, describe him as a courageous whistle-blower - with Espionage Act charges that carry up to 35 years in prison. One charge against Manning, aiding the enemy, is punishable by death, although prosecutors say they will not seek the death penalty.

It might be time to add Obama to the long line of presidents who considered crimes against “Them” - suspected lawbreakers, both foreign and domestic - less serious than crimes against “Us.”

2011-04-29: White House Punishing Press for Reporting on #FreeBradley #FreeManning

Reports have emerged over efforts by the Obama administration to chastise the San Francisco Chronicle, and in particular its reporter, Carla Marinucci, for reporting on a protest staged during an Obama fundraiser in support of incarcerated whistleblower, Bradley Manning.

Marinucci was present during the San Francisco fundraiser on April 21st when several Obama supporters stood to address the president with a protest song written specially for such occasions.

Along with other attendees at the event, the SF Chronicle reporter used her video-capable phone to record the event. She later posted the video in her report on the episode.

This action, by staunch supporters of the president, all of whom payed at least the minimum of $5000 to attend the event, was a stark indicator of how the administration’s inhumane treatment of Bradley Manning is beginning to alienate the president’s base, as he faces into his reelection campaign.

Marinucci’s footage was not the only footage that made it online. It was apparently, however, the only footage released by an official news outlet. The SF Chronicle was present at the event as part of the “print pool” - a common arrangement used by the White House when the full press corps is not able to attend. The conditions for this arrangement are that reports on the event remain textual, and that the report is submitted to the White House for redistribution to reporters who were not able to attend.

These conditions are now being used as a pretext to exclude Carla Marinucci from the ‘print pool’ for further events in the Bay Area. This is a clear demonstration of how authorities exert control over the media through the use of soft power - under the threat of removal of access and privileges when journalists start doing journalism.

Besides encroaching on the freedom of the press to report on matters of high public interest embarrassing to the president, the move would appear to be redundant, since Marinucci was not the only party to the event who recorded footage, nor was she the only person to post that video on the internet.
