Faced With #Violence and #Censorship, #Tunisian Artists Launch Urgent #Petition Calling for International #Solidarity
by Shane Ferro, June 19, 2012
Artists in Tunisia have begun circulating a petition calling for international solidarity from arts organizations in condemning the country’s government for censoring an art exhibition and siding with Salafist Islamic fundamentalists following riots incited by an art fair in the capital city.
After the 10th edition of a Tunisian art fair, “Printemps des arts,” which featured work from several local galleries as well as a curated exhibition of works by independent Tunisian artists, thousands of protesters took to the streets in the worst wave of violence since the 2011 revolts that ousted President Zine al-Abidine Ben Ali and began what would become the Arab Spring. Among the works the extremists objected to was Nadia Jelassi’s “Celui qui n’a pas…,” which includes sculptures of veiled women in the midst of a pile of stones. Another work featured a string of ants coming out of a child’s schoolbag to spell the word “Allah.” The primarily fundamentalist mob threw rocks and homemade bombs, set fires, destroyed many of the artworks at the exhibition at the Abdelliya Palace, and clashed with police, according to Reuters.
The petition, however, is not directed at the fundamentalists that incited the violence, but the moderate Islamist government that has since backed the Salafists and shut down the fair, even after many of the artists began receiving death threats via phone, text message, and social networking sites. The text reads, “M. Mehdi Mabrouk, Minister of Culture, contributed to blacklisting of creators by deciding to close the space Abdelliya and by suing the organizers of the exhibition, thus exposing the artists to popular condemnation and trial by the mob.”

Greetings, we are Anonymous.
This is a message to the Food and Drug Administration.
You’re distribution of poison for every man, woman and child in the United States has been noted by Anonymous. Over the years, we have been watching you. We have watched your campaigns of lies, how you ignore the peoples cries of protest, and your censorship of the information that should be published on every newspaper and magazine. Your laws designed to suppress the freedoms of the people, how you kill hundreds of thousands every day slowly. We have seen you imprison those who try to save the people from you. Your corrupted organization has been made clear to us that you do not respect nor care about the freedoms and wellbeing of everyone you were employed to help. Anonymous as therefore decided that the Food and Drug Administration must be destroyed. For the good of the children and for the good of the people you poison, and for our own enjoyment. We see you as a serious threat and we are ready to expel you from the face of the earth and the internet. You will not survive against the wrath of the angry masses, or Anonymous. You may tell those that we have targeted you for destruction; in fact, it is encouraged, for our enjoyment, for the lulz. You won’t prevail against us, for we are everywhere.
Your crimes against the health and well being of everyone and your punishment against those who would expose the truth will no longer be tolerated. Your enabling of corrupt laws to line the pockets of greedy corporations will not be accepted. You will be exposed to the people, and you will be removed from the internet and your organization will be destroyed. Your days of deceit are over. Revolution is here. The people will rise up against your profiteering and your corruption. We shall destroy your corrupt regimes. We will cure the poison that is the FDA.
To the people of the United States, we ask you not to buy the foods and drinks at the super market, instead, buy foods from your local organic markets, do not buy sugar free products, do not buy products tainted with monosodium glutamate or toxic preservatives, do not buy any breakfast cereals, do not buy medications with serious side effects, buy products that contain Cane Sugar, buy products that have been grown locally on the farms in your area, buy medication that has little to no side effects. End the crimes of the FDA. Expose the truth.
Operation AntiTox, engaged.

I am pro free speech, even in its extreme forms. I don’t care about your race, gender, religion, nationality, etc. I am not politically correct. I am neither a hacker, nor an activist. On-line since 1994.
Anonymous started to interest me with Operation Payback. The interest grew big enough to go from Twitter to IRC. The first impression was discouraging to put it mildly.
In the first room two anons – out of over a hundred silent ones – were running the “discussion” by exchanging Manga style comics of kids in BDSM sex scenes.
Not exactly what I came for. On to the second room.
There, almost all posts included one or more of the terms nigga, jews, faggot, I’ll raep/rape you, and at least one variant of fuck. Prepubescent nerds prick waving at its finest.
I moved on.
The third room provided me with a 20 minute conspiracy rant about how “Christian-Jewish Zionists” dominate the world.
I had enough and left.
Anonymous had reaffirmed the stereotypes and its then public image of a tribe of encyclopedia dramatica nerds with a willing army of DDoS-ing disciples.
Listening to a few “newbies” over weeks, this first experience seems the norm rather then the exception.
A few days later, accidentally I stumbled over and into OpEmmaa. First on Twitter and then on IRC. It started as a joke, the search for Emma and later “Cheerleaders for Anons”.
After a short while the discussion among the 70+ people turned a bit more serious and some female Anons “came out”. They ranted for over two hours how they were mistreated in other rooms, or had to hide their gender. How sick and tired they are of the above mentioned habits – the tiresome “tits or get the fuck out”.
I felt relieved. Not being the only one preferring a different kind of conversation and humor. And I was positively surprised how many Anons were listening, being open to critics.
Over the next couple of days OpEmmaa became a point of entry, a chat with a different tone and atmosphere.
Anons came there to relax, for entertainment, motivation, humor or an intelligent flirt. Information from operations and messages for tweeting were passed around, talent was searched, newbies were welcomed, introduced and educated, new people moved on from OpEmmaa to an operation of their interest.
Nobody was too serious about themselves or OpEmmaa. There were no big egos. The atmosphere was one of humor and self-depreciation.
Two example quotes from OpEmmaa:
“ok, so I’m here, I have ovaries, now what?”
“this is the room, where I am not bombarded with obscene proposals in private messages, where I can have fun while doing some good and support Anonymous”
What was OpEmmaa not?
It was not a chat for feminism or any other *ism for that matter.
It was not a room for men bashing.
It was not a panic room for the overly sensitive.
Neither was it a new coalition within or seggregation of Anonymous or a new brand. Everyone within #OpEmma was part of Anonymous.
OpEmmaa was an opportunity for Anonymous to expand the audience, increase participation and support. Opening Anonymous to a new set of people, having a different kind of fun, while spreading the ideas of freedom, freedom of speech and a free internet of the people.
It was a chance to diversify the image of Anonymous and make it more attractive to a larger group of people. It was a fun recruiting effort.
Where will it relaunch?

We, the undersigned, members of Big Push for Midwives Campaign and other concerned citizens, call upon the leadership and members of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists to end the war that this professional trade group has waged against home birth and Certified Professional Midwives (“CPMs”). This petition refers to the “College” and the “Congress” as “ACOG,” since the two groups are two sides of the same coin.
In this Petition, we present ACOG with these demands:
1. Stop misleading the American people, the media, and the federal and state governments about home birth!
2. Stop bullying American women about their birth-related decisions and choices!
3. End ACOG self-serving opposition to state regulation of licensed midwives!
4. Stop disparaging the education, credentials, skills, and abilities of Certified Professional Midwives (CPMs)!
5. Stop ACOG attempts to exclude CPMs from important federal maternal-child health care legislation!
Who are we? We are mothers who have given birth at home or in a birth center or who plan to give birth at home or in a birth center. We are family members who participated in an out-of-hospital birth or wish to do so. We are health professionals. We are advocates for women’s rights, for parents’ rights, and for better maternity health care. We are citizens, not K Street lobbyists, and we are united in our belief that women and families have the right to a legal home birth attended by a regulated Certified Professional Midwife.
Honor midwives on International Midwives Day and honor mothers on Mothers Day with a generous donation to the Big Push for Midwives Campaign, so we can continue our fight against ACOG to ensure that legal Certified Professional Midwives are accessible for all U.S. mothers. We need your contributions now. Please click here to donate.
