Youths 'attack Algerian protesters' #Algeria #Revolution

Recent protests in Algeria have been violently supressed by security forces [EPA]

Anti-government protesters have been attacked in the Algerian capital and an attempt made to lynch a prominent opposition politician, local media have said.

The reports said that protests organised by the National Co-ordination for Democracy and Change (CNDC) in Algiers were violently suppressed on Saturday morning.

According to the the Algerian daily newspaper El Watan, a group of youths tried to lynch Said Sadi, the president of the Rally for Culture and Democracy (RCD).

Dozens of youths wearing banners supporting Abdelaziz Bouteflicka, the Algerian president, forced Sadi to flee in his car after they threatened to kill him in the al-Madania neighbourhood of Algiers, the publication said.

The CNDC is an umbrella group that was founded in January in the wake of riots that killed five people and wounded over 800.

Other recent protests in Algeria have been violently supressed by security forces. The CNDC has lost support from other opposition groups, which argue Sadi has exploited them for personal political gain.

Algeria recently repealed its controversial state of emergency, but public protest remains banned.

Pan-Maghreb solidarity

Meanwhile, Algeria’s oldest opposition party has urged Algerians to engage in a “peaceful struggle” for change in the nation a day ahead of a planned anti-government demonstration in the capital.

Distancing itself from the protests organised by the CNDC, the Socialist Forces Front (FFS) focused on its historic pan-Maghreb roots, expressing solidarity with similar struggles in neighbouring Tunisia, Morocco and Libya.

“We need a peaceful struggle every day. It’s this civic exercise that … will bring change,” Karim Tabbou, the first secretary of the FFS, told a gathering of about 3,000 people in Algiers.

“We will not get caught in confrontation and violence,” he added, speaking in a room decorated with portraits of Hocine Ait-Ahmed, the party’s leader.

Ait-Ahmed, 84, was one of the earliest leaders of the struggle against French colonial rule.

Those present at the meeting called for the creation of a new pan-North African group “Maghreb for the people” as opposed to the now-defunct Arab Maghreb Union (UMA), founded in 1989 by Algeria, Libya, Morocco, Mauritania and Tunisia.

“Neither Morocco or Algeria will be exceptions [to the wave of uprisings] change is inevitable,” declared Mustapha Labraimi of the Moroccan Party for Progress and Socialism (PPS).

The UMA broke down in 1994 due to political differences among its members and the longrunning conflict between Algeria and Morocco over Western Sahara.

Mustapha Bouchachi, the president of the Algerian Human Rights League, called for more freedom after years of civil strife.

“People the world over deserve to enjoy freedom and democracy, but I don’t know of another people which has sacrificed so much to fight for its freedom and obtain its independence,” he said.

#Algeria repeals emergency law - Middle East

The 19-year state of emergency has constrained civil liberties and human rights in the North African oil exporter [AFP]

Algeria’s cabinet has adopted an order to lift a 19-year-old state of emergency in a concession designed to avoid the tide of uprisings sweeping the Arab world, but protesters said the measure did not go far enough.

A draft law approved by the cabinet would repeal the emergency law as soon as it is published in the government’s official journal, the official Algerie Presse Service reported on Wednesday.

Ending the emergency powers was one of the demands voiced by opposition groups which have been staging weekly protests in the Algerian capital that sought to emulate uprisings in Egypt and neighbouring Tunisia.

“The lifting of the state of emergency is still positive but it’s not enough,” Mustafa Bouchachi, chairman of the Algerian Human Rights League and one of the organisers of the protests, said on Tuesday.

“We need a real opening up for political, media and social activities so that the people can experience democracy for
themselves,” he told the Reuters news agency.

The emergency measures, long lambasted by international human rights groups, have barred peaceful protests, limited constitutionally granted political freedoms and allowed for what many described as arbitrary detentions.

Measures ‘for change’

President Abdelaziz Bouteflika, who is 73, is likely to remain under pressure - both from protesters and from inside
the ruling establishment - to deliver more change and to explain to the public what he plans to do.

Algeria is a major energy exporter which pumps gas via pipelines under the Mediterranean to Spain and France.

The measures included:

Giving 100 billion Algerian dinars ($1.38bn) to
public banks which they are to use to finance long-term
investments in business   Reducing social security contributions for businesses to encourage them to hire more people   Promoting the farming sector, one of the country’s biggest employers, by offering low-interest loans to farmers and making
it easier for domestic companies to lease farmland

The state of emergency was imposed at the beginning of the country’s decade-long civil war, which pitted the Armed Islamic Group (GIA) against a military-dominated government that refused to abide by the results of a 1991 election, widely believed to have been won by the Islamic Salvation Front (FIS).

Tens of thousands of people have died in the ensuing conflict.

However, in the past few years the violence has subsided and government critics have alleged the emergency rules are being used to repress political freedoms.

The emergency powers will not be lifted until the order adopted by the cabinet is published in the official gazette, which is likely to happen by the end of February.

“The state of emergency was implemented for the sole needs of the anti-terrorist fight,” Algeria’s official APS news agency quoted Bouteflika as saying at the cabinet meeting.

Bouteflika had announced earlier this month that the emergency rules would be lifted soon.

Tuesday’s decision will have few practical implications: new rules were also adopted which will allow the military to continue involving itself in domestic security, as it had done under the emergency powers.

The emergency rules banned protest marches in the capital, but Bouteflika said earlier this month this restriction would remain in force indefinitely.

The other measures adopted by the government on Tuesday focused on tackling unemployment, which official figures put at about 10 per cent but is much higher among the young.

The government also approved a package of measures aimed at reducing unemployment, which is one of the biggest grievances of ordinary people in Algeria.

———————————————————————————————————————--———-

FREE-THINKING CITIZENS OF THE WORLD,

The Algerian government imposes, upon its own citizens, intolerable restrictions on their basic liberties. The Algerian government wants to enforce a future where injustices remain unchallenged and where existing exploitation of one man by another remains unpunished. The Algerian government hides the truth from its citizens and denies them free expression and access to information. Let’s call for an end to censorship. Now is the time for freedom and transparency, a time for people to express themselves freely and to be heard from anywhere across the world. How else than through well informed citizens can a society prosper and flourish?

The Algerian government hereby declares itself an enemy of Anonymous and the people. Anonymous hears the cries for freedom from the Algerian people, and has decided to step up. We cannot, and will not, remain silent while this injustice is being done. Anonymous will help them in this struggle against oppression. We believe the Algerian attempts at censorship and oppression are doomed to fail if each one of us takes up our individual responsibilities: For only we, the people, decide to make it so.

To the Algerian government: Restrictions on the freedom of speech and denial of information to your citizens are in direct violation of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and cannot be tolerated. Anonymous challenges all those who are involved in censorship. Not only will Anonymous take action, Anonymous will also make sure that the international media sees the horrid reality you impose upon your people. It is in the hands of the Algerian government to end this; continue your repression and you will be subject to civil protest - lend an ear to the claim of freedom from your people and the hostilities will cease.

To the Algerian people: We stand together and united against this oppression. This struggle is not just for you alone, but for the whole of mankind. Citizens are no longer quiet, and can no longer be simply peddled and choked into submission. When forced to by the threat of oppression, we can be loud as hell - and when the people roar, it will send shivers down the spines of all those who want to stifle our freedom and take our precious liberties away.

Anonymous is your brothers and sisters, your sons and daughters, your parents and your friends, regardless of age, gender, race, religion, ethnicity, or place of birth. Anonymous is you. You will not be denied your right to free speech, free press, free association and your universal right to freely access information, both in real life and through the internet.

Join us in this battle for freedom of information worldwide! For as Edmund Burke once said: “All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing.”

We are Anonymous.
We are legion.
We do not forgive.
We do not forget.
Expect us.

Raafatology ® الْأَغــــانّى لِلـــرَأْفَتــانّى: Algeria’s Dictator: Step down NOW so we can move on to the next country #Algeria #feb12 #Algerie #fev12 #Revolution

The Algerian dictator should step down today in day one to save our time so we can move on to the next Arab country.

He just witnessed 2 dictators got their ass kicked. So if he is smarter than them, he should just pack his bags and waive goodbye.

I also, suggest no speeches or statements. No one believes them and they triple the number of protesters.

Don’t think your cabinet like you and don’t count on them! They will sell you for free when the number of protesters increase.

Make it simple man! we really have no time for this. We are looking to change the entire Middle East by mid June.

so be smart and vanish!!

Thousands Turn Out For Anti-Govt Protests In Algeria : NPR #Algeria #Feb12

Organizers of an anti-government demonstration in the Algerian capital say several thousand people have gathered in the city center.

Under the country’s long-standing state of emergency, protests are banned in the capital, Algiers, and hundreds of riot police were on hand Saturday. They blocked streets and charged the crowd in a bid to prevent protesters from reaching the city center.

Demonstrators chanted “no to the police state” and “Bouteflika out,” a reference to the country’s President Abdelaziz Bouteflika, who’s been in power since 1999.

Saturday’s protest comes the day after massive protests in Egypt toppled the president, and weeks after similar demonstrations in neighboring Tunisia also succeeded in ousting the president.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP’s earlier story is below.

ALGIERS, Algeria (AP) — Hundreds of police began taking up positions the night before a pro-democracy protest march in Algiers by militants who have vowed to defy an official ban.

The planned march on Saturday is aimed at pressing for reforms to push this oil- and gas-rich North African giant toward democracy.

The weeks-long uprising in Egypt that forced Hosni Mubarak to abandon the presidency after 30 years was bound to fuel the hopes of Algerians seeking change — as did the “people’s revolution” in neighboring Tunisia. A month of deadly uprisings there pushed Zine El Abidine Ben Ali into exile Jan. 14.

However, many Algerians fear any prospect of conflict after years of a brutal insurgency by Islamist extremists that has left an estimated 200,.000 dead. There is no specific call by organizers of the protest march to oust President Abdelaziz Bouteflika.

With scattered strikes and clashes, including five days of rioting in early January, the atmosphere in Algiers has been tense.

There have been numerous copy-cat suicides, and attempted suicides, in Algeria like the self-immolation attempt by a young man that set off the Tunisian protests in mid-December.

The Coordination for Democratic Change in Algeria, an umbrella group of human rights activists, unionists, lawyers and others, insists the march will take place despite numerous warnings by authorities to stay out of the streets.

Buses and vans filled with armed police were posted at strategic points along the march route and around Algiers, including at the “Maison de la Presse,” a small village in Algiers where newspapers have their headquarters.

The daily El Watan said Friday that barrages were thrown up on roads leading to Algiers, apparently to stop busloads of potential demonstrators expected to descend on the capital.

In a clear bid to placate militants, Algerian authorities announced last week that a state of emergency in place since 1992, at the start of the Islamist insurgency, will be lifted in the “very near future.” However, it maintained a ban on demonstrations in the capital. Authorities offered to allow Saturday’s demonstrators to rally in a meeting hall.

The army’s decision to cancel this nation’s first multi-party legislative elections in January 1992 to thward a likely victory by a Muslim fundamentalist party set off the insurgency. Scattered violence continues.
