L’idée d’une « guerre » contre la scientologie a été lancée après le 16 janvier 2008. Ce jour-là, une vidéo de Tom Cruise, l’un des plus célèbres (et ardents) partisans de la scientologie, apparaît sur Youtube. L’acteur y débite énormité sur énormité (seuls les adeptes de la scientologie pourraient faire les premiers secours en cas d’accident de voiture ; les scientologues feraient autorité en matière de désintoxication ; la scientologie va permettre la paix dans le monde et autres bêtises) sur un ton fanatique. L’Eglise de scientologie fait rapidement retirer la vidéo de Youtube.

La vidéo se répand comme une traînée de poudre sur le net, les menaces de procès de la secte ne faisant qu’attiser l’envie des internautes de voir Tom Cruise se ridiculiser.

Ce sont les menaces de procès qui convainquent Anonymous de mettre en place une attaque, sur le principe du déni de service distribué (Distributed Denial of Service, ou DDoS). Le fonctionnement est simple : des centaines ou des milliers d’ordinateurs envoient en même temps une énorme quantité de données vers un même site web. L’effet est double : la machine hébergeant le site web ne peut généralement pas tenir la charge, et ralentit terriblement, voire s’arrête. Et toute la bande-passante permettant l’accès au site est saturée, empêchant des visiteurs normaux de tenter d’y accéder. Dans tous les cas, le site visé devient indisponible,…

A common thread that binds many internet users and impels them toward Anonymous is the concept that information, by its nature, is free; and that communication should be unfettered. The open sharing and expression of ideas and opinions, however controversial or divergent, is the cornerstone of all free societies. This ability empowers individuals to determine their own destinies; justice is possible only when the influential cannot force others to remain silent about abuse.

The precise meaning of “Freedom of Information” varies according to the individual. To some, it simply means being able to seek out public knowledge on a subject without fear of retribution or censorship from the government. This view is based on the idea that access to accurate, relevant information informs rational opinions about the world around us.

To others, Freedom of Information is a call for greater corporate and governmental transparency. This conviction stems from the notion that in order for citizens to participate fully and democratically, those in power must share all kinds of information–whether or not it is politic for them to do so. Thus fraud, theft and abuse must be exposed to the public, and the perpetrators held accountable for their actions.

Finally, some individuals view Freedom of Information as a call to rethink current positions on the concept of intellectual property, in the interest of a better world. This view favors diminishing legal and corporate limitations on the use of ideas or creative work that may inhibit innovation and progress.

For any or all of these reasons, many Anonymous activists believe that Freedom of Information is as vital to a free society as the universal right to freedom of expression. WhyWeProtest supports these activists in their various Freedom of Information initiatives.

Church of Scientology attempts damage control with new ad #Co$ #$cientology

After taking a recent beating in the press the Church of Scientology is engaged in damage control. Trying to polish its tarnished image, the religion developed by L Ron Hubbard is giving a big push to a television commercial extolling the supposed virtues of Scientology.

The church is reeling from a recent profile of former member Paul Haggis. The profile is extensive and exhaustive, detailing Scientology crimes and misdemeanors, incriminating the secretive Sea Org, and making allegations of slave labor and human trafficking.

The long (two minutes) commercial has been given national air time during The Today Show on CBS. At two minutes long, the ad is hard to miss. The TV commercial is an attempt to promote its social programs such as “mental health reform” and “criminal reform” which — it claims — reach 2.2 million people every day.

The recent allegations against Scientology came to light in the recently released profile of former Church of Scientology member Canadian writer-director Paul Haggis, a profile written by Lawrence Wright entitled “Apostate: Paul Haggis vs. the Church of Scientology.”

The ad claims the Church of Scientology sponsors social programs that reach 2,208,975 people every day: Tutoring, mentoring, drug education, human rights education, drug rehabilitation, criminal reform, and mental health reform—in 189 nations.
